Top Medical Entrance Exams Candidates Must Know

The medical field is one of the most preferred and conventional educational fields for Indian students. Every year more than 13 lakh aspirants appear for these medical examinations in India. Many students who aspire to become doctors in the future appear for several medical entrance examinations.

These medical entrance examinations are both at UG and PG level. Today, we bring in front of you some of these top medical entrance examinations that all candidates must be aware of:

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is one of the most popular and only national level medical entrance exams in India for getting into medical as well as dental colleges. NEET is conducted at both UG as well as PG levels separately. The exam is conducted in offline mode. The exam is also now mandatory to study medicine abroad.

1. NEET UG

NEET (UG) level exam is based on the syllabus of 11th and 12th class. It consists of 4 sections namely, physics, chemistry, botany and zoology. Through NEET (UG), students can apply to MBBS and BDS courses. It is an MCQ type examination with 180 questions and total marks being 720.

For NEET UG, students must be at least 17 years old, and the maximum age limit is 25 years. The aspirants must have physics, chemistry, and biology/biotechnology as main subjects and must have secured an aggregate of minimum 50%.

2. NEET PG

The exam is the only entrance exam in India for admission into MD and MS courses. It is an online exam consisting of 300 questions. It is conducted by NBE (National board of examinations).

For NEET PG, aspirants must hold a full-time MBBS degree, permanent or provisional registration certificate issued by MCI / SMC and 12 months rotating internship after the MBBS degree.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) conducts its medical entrance examination for admission to all its colleges across the country. AIIMS is also one of the most popular and sought after entrance examination in India. It is an online examination and is conducted separately for admission into MBBS and PG level courses.

1. AIIMS MBBS

AIIMS MBS has nearly eight lakhs aspirants every year. It is an online exam consisting of 200 MCQs along with reason-assertion. The sections contain Physics, Chemistry, Biology, General Knowledge, Aptitude and Logical Reasoning. The exam offers a total of 800 seats across its nine campuses.

Students must be at least 17 years old to be eligible for the exam. They must have Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English as main subjects and must have secured an aggregate of minimum 60%.

AIIMS PG

AIIMS PG is conducted twice a year for admission to MD/MS seats across 6 AIIMS institutes. It is a computer-based examination containing questions from pre-clinical, clinical and para-clinical subjects of MBBS. The exam offers admission to 499 seats across its six campuses.

Candidates must hold an MBBS degree for MD/MS courses and BDS degree for MDS course with a minimum aggregate of 55% in MBBS. Students must also have completed one-year rotating internship after the MBBS degree.

Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research

JIPMER conducts a medical entrance examination for admission into its Puducherry and Karaikal campuses. It is one of the unique colleges in India providing education in European medicine.

1. JIPMER (MBBS)

JIPMER MBBS is an online MCQ type examination consisting of 200 questions. The various sections are Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English Comprehension, Logical and Quantitative Reasoning.

For JIPMER MBBS, students must be at least 17 years old. The aspirants must have Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English as main subjects. They must have secured an aggregate of minimum 60%.

2. JIPMER (PG)

JIPMER PG exam can be given only by those candidates who have completed a one-year internship after their MBBS degree. This exam offers admission to MD/MS courses of JIPMER. It is a computer-based examination consisting of 250 questions. This exam is conducted twice a year.

Candidates must hold an MBBS degree with a minimum aggregate of 55% in MBBS to be eligible for the exam. They must also have completed one-year rotating internship after the MBBS degree.

Armed Forces Medical College

AFMC Pune is another prestigious medical institute in India which conducts its entrance examination. Aspirants aiming to pursue UG and PG medical and nursing courses for defence services can apply for the exam. The college has 29 departments overall. The college also admits students based on NEET examination.

AFMC takes an online MCQ based examination with 200 questions. The various sections are Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Reasoning and English. To be eligible for the entrance exam, candidates must be unmarried, Indian nationals and should fulfil the academic requirements laid by NEET. Aspirants also need to undergo and pass a medical test before admission.

Christian Medical College, Vellore

CMC Vellore is one of the top private colleges in India for BDS and MBBS aspirants. The college offers courses in MBBS through NEET followed by their aptitude test. The college also offers PG diploma courses, fellowship courses and other allied health sciences diplomas.

The college also offers admission into Group A and Group B courses. For Group A courses, i.e., (B.Sc. Nursing/AHS Degree) there is an online test which comprises of 90 questions. The sections are physics, chemistry, biology and general ability. For Group B courses, i.e., (M. Sc./ Diploma/MPH and Fellowship Courses) there is a computer-based test consisting of basic science, general ability, current awareness and general knowledge.

Students must be at least 17 years old to be eligible for the entrance test. The aspirants must have Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English as main subjects and must have secured an aggregate of minimum 50%.

Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research

PGIMER conducts its entrance examination for giving admission to its PG courses like MD, MS, MDS, DM and other PG courses. The exam is conducted twice a year. It is an offline examination consisting of 250 questions in 3 hours. The questions are based on the MBBS curriculum.

For PGIMER PG, aspirants must hold a full-time MBBS degree, permanent or provisional registration certificate issued by MCI / SMC and 12 months rotating internship after the MBBS degree.

Diplomate of National Board Centralized Entrance

DNB CET is a national level medical entrance examination conducted by the NBE. Candidates can get admissions into DM/MCh and DNB three year super speciality courses through DNB CET. The exam is conducted twice a year. The exam contains 300 multiple choice questions, and the total duration of the exam is 3 hours 45 minutes.

Aspirants must hold a full-time MBBS degree, permanent or provisional registration certificate issued by MCI / SMC and 12 months rotating internship after the MBBS degree.

NEET MDS

NEET MDS is one of the only entrance examinations for aspirants seeking admission to Masters of Dental Surgery course in India. Only those candidates can appear for NEET MDS who have completed their BDS (Bachelor of Dental Studies) course along with a 12 months internship. The exam contains 240 multiple choice questions containing 17 different topics covered in the BDS course. It is a 3-hour exam which is conducted online.

Aspirants must hold a full-time BDS degree, the permanent or provisional registration certificate issued by DCI/State dental council and 12 months rotatory internship after MBBS degree.

Foreign Medical Graduate Screening Exam

FMGE is a national level screening test. It allows medical graduates to get a permanent or provisional certificate from the MCI. The exam is conducted twice a year. This medical entrance examination is conducted by the NBE. FMGE exam consists of 300 questions, and the paper is divided into two parts. It is a 3-hour exam and is a computer based online test.
