A 'Made in India' IT platform - MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses), or Swayam - will host courses taught in classrooms from Class IX to post graduation. The program offers digital classrooms with the help of internet and satellite connectivity to the remotest corners in the country. These courses have been developed by over 1,000 expert faculty members from premier institutions like IITs, JNU, Delhi University and Anna University. It can be accessed by anyone, anywhere at any time. All the courses are interactive and available free of cost. Students from various recognised institutes in India will be able to earn credits on clearing these online courses.
Swayam is essentially a portal, which has been formulated as a solution to the problem of difficult access to physical educational infrastructure and teachers along with study material and textbooks. It will provide online study material to students free of cost and the courses will be taught via digital classrooms. The objective of this effort is to take the best teaching learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged. SWAYAM seeks to bridge the digital divide for students who have hitherto remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been able to join the mainstream of the knowledge economy. A total 32 Swayam Prabha DTH channels launched along Swayam portal seek to help students living in remote areas who do not have proper connectivity to IT services.
