The majority of graduates in India are generalists with broader socio-economic knowledge and lack desired skill sets or expertise. There exist a wide gap between the skill-sets of fresh graduates and the needs of organizations. It is a fact that, only 12 percent of the educated community pursues masters and only 1 percent or less pursues PhD/Diploma.
At an entry level, organizations try to judge a candidate on academic credential, aptitude, communication, and inter-personal skills but as an employment facilitator I have personally noticed that apart from the above said parameters, organizations also look for the X-factor, zeal for learning, positive attitude, commitment and understanding of upcoming learning/challenges.
As per Ministry of Labor and Employment, unemployment rate decreased to 4.9 percent for people actively looking for jobs in 2013. Many of us will agree to the facts that increase in population and unorganized /informal economy has created a challenge towards creating skilled and employable employees.
Most of the employable graduates comes from approximately top 100 out of 693 universities and 35,000 plus affiliated academic bodies. This is primarily because these top institutions actively seek industry collaboration in academic system by continuous association and implementations. They also have numerous strategic tie-ups with industry bodies like Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and National Skill Development Corporation.
At this junction, the role of upcoming universities is focused more on employability based skill development programs. They need to ensure the quality in order to influence other academic bodies by inculcating and adopting the flexible academic calendar in accordance to the organizations and guidelines given by the accreditation body.
