Karnataka is the eight largest state in India by population and has a literacy rate of 75 percent. The state is a cultural and commercial melting pot of the nation, hosting students and businesses alike from all parts of the country and abroad. Karnataka has reputed institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Management and the National Institute of Technology Karnataka. The state also has the city of Bangalore which sits at a height of over 900 meters above sea level. The city is a renowned startup and tech hub, and also is a great destination for higher education. This is possible due to the diligent governance of the state. The state of Karnataka has developed bodies to ensure progress such as Karnataka State Knowledge Commission and the Vision Group in Science and Technology. These councils ensure that the steady progress in the area of education is not stemmed. Karnataka is one of the pioneering states to introduce reforms in the higher education sector. Upon realizing the importance of an envisioning exercise for higher education, Vision 2020: Higher Education Karnataka was devised. The vision envisages a forward-looking higher education system for the State of Karnataka with a hope to build it as a model state in India for excellence in higher education. The document has laid down a path so that the state can witness an increase in student enrolment with the actual numbers increasing from 12,60,038 (18.1 percent GER) [2012-13] to 22,58,000 in 2020, reaching a GER of 35 percent. The report also shares thoughts on many other areas in which the state can improve its quality in higher education. With "Vision 2020," Karnataka has introduced its roadmaps in higher education arena and it is the time for the whole country to look into it and act together for a better nation.This issue of Higher Education Review is focused on the higher education scenario in the state of Karnataka.
