Having outperformed the global economy for the sixth consecutive year, the travel and tourism industry has proven to be flexible to both geopolitical uncertainty and economic volatility. The Government of India's `Incredible India' and `Athiti Devo Bhava' initiatives have made an effective impact on the travel and tourism competitiveness, raising India from 65th position in 2013 to 40th position in The Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017. The industry has the ability to make a real difference in the lives of people by driving growth, creating jobs, reducing poverty and fostering development and tolerance. As of 2017-18, 81.1 million people were employed in the tourism sector in India which was 12.38 per cent of total employment in the country. Under the Prime Minister's Skill Development Mission, the Ministry of Tourism's target is to train 5 million people by 2022.
