However, generation over generation, some woman or the other has always broken the stereotype, proving herself to be different yet unique. From Rani Lakshmi Bai leading an entire battle against Britishers, to Kiran Bedi being the first IPS Officer and Kalpana Chawla being the first Indian woman in space. Indian women have time and again proven that they are second to none. Higher education industry, despite its image of women friendly domain, is still majorly steered by men. However, in such scenario, women are still fighting their way to the top and they increasingly inhabit top-ranking roles in traditionally male-dominated industries. One of the most significant transformations in education in India over the past several decades is the drastic increase in women's access to colleges and universities. The Indian Government has also introduced policies and procedures with the goal of sensitizing the higher education system, recognize gender equity and increase the number of women enrolling for higher education. Higher education for women in India has witnessed an impressive growth over the years and the Government is pooling resources needed to promote female education at all levels. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, "If you educate the man, you educate the person but if you educate the woman, you educate the nation". Savitri Bai Phule, the first woman teacher in India will always be remembered for setting up India's first girls' school, and today numerous females are marching on the same trail. Celebrating the success of such Women Leaders in Indian Education sector, in this issue of Higher Education Review magazine, we present `Top 20 Women Leaders in Education Industry ­ 2019', a carefully curated list where we have narrated the untold stories of women along with a brief on the educational organizations they are associated with presently.
