Student internships represent a unique, innovative, nontraditional educational approach based on experiential learning. Internships take students out into the community and the real world to internship sites for experiences in the field. Internships which are Challenging and high-quality have proven to be an effective and efficacious approach that has many advantages and few disadvantages. Research has shown that there is a direct correlation between the internships in which students have served and the ultimate career paths which they select. Effective, high-quality and practical based internships are increasingly being recognized as integral elements and vital components of students educational or academic programs. Internships play a valuable role in students learning experiences, especially for research.
Students prepare suitable, and perhaps should assess if research is a career that is suitable for them. Once assessed the interest and suitable career, student should take some of the points into consideration.
Academic preparation is necessary, to do well in research (or any career for that matter), motivation and drive is extremely important without which not much can be achieved. Most of the factors like Academic Preparation, Projects and internships, Publications, Aspiration/Goal, not only indicate the academic credentials of the student, but also indicate the drive and motivation of the applicant. Committees look at these and other such factors to analyze student and provide them internship. They assess whether the student is just claiming interest in research or is truly interested in the internship he/she wants to opt for. Consequently, if a student is not interested in research or any other subject, as a career, he/she should perhaps not apply for these internships, leaving them for those who want to pursue research and for whom these internships can be truly a turning point in the career.
