Internationalizing Education, British Council Opening Doors for Students

Each year, thousands of international students successfully gain a visa to study in the United Kingdom and there is no limit on the number of student visas that can be issued. The UK government welcomes their international students by letting them study there and providing them opportunity to make their future bright and prospering. Universities and colleges in UK offer thousands of excellent courses, leading to qualifications that are respected by employers and academics worldwide. When one think of UK higher education qualifications, one might think of bachelors and master’s degrees, MBAs and PhDs.

British Council has played vital role in imparting this Higher education opportunity to students from the different corners of the world. Higher education has been divided into two programmes. The first is Internationalizing Higher Education (IHE) and the second is a multi partner programme called UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI). IHE facilitates policy dialogues and partnerships, promotes scholarships, student mobility and alumni engagement. UKIERI aims to enhance educational links between India and the UK by supporting partnerships across all thematic areas. The programme focuses on Innovation, Skills Development, and Leadership across all aspects of education and helps students, staff and researchers gain mobility between the two countries. The programme facilitates policy dialogues and engages with Government agencies both in the UK and India on areas of mutual interest like Credit Recognition, Quality Assurance, Leadership and Knowledge Transfer. The British Council aims to ensure that all universities, colleges, schools and language centers teaching international students are responsible institutions.

The standard academic year starts in UK starts from September or October and runs until June or July. Some courses are more flexible, however, and offer a range of start dates. Some courses include a year of working in industry – for example, working for a business, charity or public sector organization. This will usually be for the third year of a degree course or the second year of an HND and, depending on the employer, may be full-time paid employment. The purpose of this is to introduce student to the world of work, while gaining valuable experience in a profession student might consider after completing their higher education course. The United Kingdom is home to some of the world’s top universities, which attract thousands of students, faculty and researchers every year, including many from the United States. Employers around the world recognize the value of a UK degree that secures the future of student.

Enabling student and academic mobility, British Council focuses on internationalizing education, sharing the UK’s expertise and innovation globally, and bringing partners together to work on collaborative projects.
