Education Loan Eligibility Criteria in India for Students

Academic Performance

Academic performance can affect one's chances of getting an education loan as well. This is because the lender will consider the student's academic record in order to determine whether the course he wishes to pursue is a logical continuation of his education.

Grades, test scores, and academic credentials can be considered according to the course and the lender. In the case of competitive professional courses, the lender will also consider the entrance exam in which the applicant was admitted to the course.

Academic achievement does not imply that students who score low marks cannot apply for education loans. The lender evaluates the entire application, which includes admission into the university, potential courses, co-applicant background, and payment schedule. Students need to submit their academic details and exam results while submitting the loan application.

“Education loans for studying abroad have become the quiet venture capital of middle‑class India. Instead of asking families to liquidate homes or savings, they spread an once‑prohibitive fee spike into repayments that start when the student’s earning power starts to rise. For a student from Srinagar or a tier‑2 town, the choice is often not between two foreign universities, but between staying home altogether and taking that academic leap; the loan is the only bridge between the local classroom and a lab in Berlin, UK or Toronto. When structured around the total cost of attendance i.e., tuition, travel, accommodation, and insurance, these loans let students choose programs for academic fit and research depth, not merely for the cheapest postcode. In that sense, an education loan is more than debt: it is a risk‑sharing pact between a family and its future self, turning talent into transnational opportunity rather than deferred aspiration,” says Dr. Rizwan Manzoor, Assistant Professor, Operations and Supply Chain Management, IMT Ghaziabad

Co-Applicant Requirements

Co-applicant is an important part of many applications for educational loans. The banks usually require that the parent or guardian be co-signer to the application especially if the amount involved is considerable.

The co-applicant is supposed to have a steady source of income and good credit history. The co-applicant can be a parent, spouse, guardian or other member of the family depending on the bank’s terms.

This is because most of the education loans are normally paid back either after completion of the student's program or after expiry of the moratorium period. It is therefore necessary that the lending bank makes a critical evaluation of the financial standing of the repayment plan.

Before filling the loan application form, the family should go through the financial history of the co-applicant.
