Govt announces Rs 400 cr Institute of Creative Tech similar to IITs & IIMs
Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw announced while speaking to an audience at the opening ceremony of the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES-2025) at Jio World Centre in Mumbai. The inaugural edition of the four-day summit will highlight the nation’s creative sector.
“Global tech giants such as NVIDIA, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Star India, Meta, and Adobe are collaborating to make IICT a world-class institution. WAVES and IICT will further strengthen Mumbai’s role as a key centre in the global creative ecosystem,” said the Union minister.
Discussing the Rs 400 crore initiative, Vaishnaw remarked that although the central government has financed the project, the Maharashtra government is supplying the land for it.
Intended to serve as a national centre of excellence, the IICT will be set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in partnership with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), modeled after the Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Management.
Describing the multi-crore initiative, the Union Minister stated it will be executed in two stages: the initial phase at Peddar Road and the subsequent phase within the Film City in Goregaon. Intended to cover areas like animation, visual effects, gaming, comics, and extended reality (AVGC-XR), the institute is expected to showcase cutting-edge facilities, encompassing virtual production setups, immersive studios, animation labs, gaming laboratories, editing and sound suites, along with numerous smart classrooms, according to the Union Minister.
