IIT Bombay PhD Admissions 2026-27 Open September 16

IIT Bombay announces the tentative Spring Semester 2026-27 PhD and Double Doctoral Degree Programme schedule. Applications open on September 16, with the regular deadline on October 17 and late applications until October 21.

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) announces the tentative admission schedule for PhD and Double Doctoral Degree Programme (DDDP) programmes for the Spring Semester of the 2026–27 academic years. The institute is scheduled to release the admission advertisement on September 4, 2026, followed by the opening of the online application portal on September 16.

Candidates interested in pursuing doctoral studies at IIT Bombay can submit their applications until October 17, 2026, without a late fee. The institute also provides an extended application window until October 21, during which candidates can submit applications by paying the prescribed late fee. IIT Bombay advises applicants to review the eligibility criteria and admission requirements of their respective academic unit before applying.

The PhD programmes at IIT Bombay cover a broad range of disciplines across engineering, sciences, and humanities and social sciences. The institute states that doctoral education combines coursework with advanced research leading to the submission of a thesis. It also encourages interdisciplinary research through joint supervision and collaboration among departments and academic groups.

Following the completion of applications, the concerned academic departments are scheduled to prepare and display the list of shortlisted candidates on October 30, 2026. Candidates selected for the next stage are called for an entrance test and/or interview. The exact dates and format of these assessments depend on the concerned department, school, centre or other academic unit.

The selection process is followed by recommendations from the respective academic units. These recommendations are scheduled to reach the Academic Office by December 11, 2026. IIT Bombay plans to declare admission results and conduct fee payment between December 18 and December 23, 2026. Selected candidates must complete the required formalities within the specified period.

The institute also provides financial support to eligible doctoral scholars through different categories of assistantships and fellowships. Under the Teaching Assistantship category, the monthly assistantship is ₹37,000 for the first two years and increases to ₹42,000 for the remaining period, subject to applicable conditions. Research Assistantship candidates receive ₹42,000 for the first two years and ₹47,000 thereafter. IIT Bombay also admits eligible candidates supported by external fellowships and PMRF.

Semester registration for selected Spring Semester candidates is tentatively scheduled from December 31, 2026, to January 1, 2027, while reporting and orientation are planned for January 1 and 2, 2027.

As the schedule remains tentative, applicants are advised to regularly check IIT Bombay’s official admission portal for the final advertisement, eligibility requirements, department-specific criteria and any revisions to the admission timeline.
