Bheemanna Khandre Institute of Technology: Moulding the Rural Masterminds
Shanti Vardhak Education Society (SVES), which started with Primary and High School in 1963, now runs nearly 24 educational institutions from primary level to PG level where more than 10000 students are pursuing studies. Established in 1982, Bheemanna Khandre Institute of Technology (BKIT), Bhalki is the flagship institution of this society. "The institute was started with name Rural Engineering College Bhalki, which was the clear depiction of what we wanted to achieve. In those times, the majority of the population was living in the rural areas and our main focus was to impart the quality education to them," says Dr. Bipin Bihari Lal, Principal, BKIT.
Institutes like BKIT, which are operating from remote areas, have been instrumental in popularizing highly professional degrees such as engineering. "Since the inception of our campus, we have been creating awareness among rural students that engineering is not just a degree but a value that can change many lives," opines Dr. Bipin. Today, in addition to the students from the nearby areas, the BKIT receives students from over 12 different states. "At present we have courses in Civil, Mechanical, ECE, CS and Chemical Engineering. Though, all these courses are open to all, we mainly focus on the rural population and support them with the preferred number of admissions and scholarships," adds Dr. Bipin.
Under the guidance of eminent faculty members, many students of BKIT have come up with new ideas that are useful for the community.
Affiliated to VTU Belagavi, BKIT has an edge over many other technical institutions in India, as they are highly focussed on academic research activities. The college works with five research centres where the students and the faculty members undertake numerous projects with an intention to fulfil the needs of the regional community. Hence, this northern tip of Karnataka is presently aided with the engineering techniques in the fields of agriculture and all the other related fields. "We also provide our students the opportunities to work with the industry, which helps them in knowing the industry environment. At times, these opportunities have also led the budding entrepreneurs to fulfil their dreams regarding their start-up plans," adds Dr. Bipin.
Under the guidance of eminent faculty members, many students of BKIT have come up with new ideas that are useful for the community. "Recently, our final year students under the guidance of the faculty have come up with an idea related to diagnostics. This work is held in association with the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee and the Post Graduate institute of Medical Sciences and research, Chandigarh. The research has been a success where in a very useful product has been launched, but others might not be able to use it until it is commercialized," pinpoints Dr. Bipin. Another team of students and faculty members is also working in the field of 'Internet of Things' and all the research works aim at bringing beneficial changes in the society.
"It is the vast experience of my teammates that is making them capable of leading students in a positive manner. In my 30 years of experience with BKIT, I have seen the hard work and strain taken by my mentor team and students in the teaching and learning. It is this backbreaking work, which has made us one of the best engineering colleges not just in Karnataka, but in whole India," claims Dr. Bipin. BKIT takes a complete care of the students through the best teaching methodologies in such a way that students are enabled for a lifelong learning along with the ability to use the learnt theoretical knowledge in their future to help themselves and the community. "Currently, we are aiming to achieve the autonomous status and in addition to it, we would also like to have more number of research centres, so that we can contribute efficient engineers to our country who can work for the society," concludes Dr. Bipin.
Dr. Bipin Bihari Lal, Principal
Dr. Bipin Bihari Lal has been working with the institute for more than 30 years. From the past 14 years, he is holding the responsibility as the Principal of the BKIT. He believes that engineers are real change makers of the world. With this belief, he and his team impart high quality education with the support of world class infrastructural facilities.
