Discard Preconceived Notions and give in to the Disillusionment
We live in a world that is built on illusions created by the gaps between expectations and reality. The illusions exist on all levels. Students have the illusion that a certificate will get them a good job, parents opine that sending their kids abroad is the best possible choice for them and recruiters want candidates that can work from day one. In reality, the degree does not guarantee a job, parents send their kids abroad; their sons and daughters return to India with a degree and a heavy education loan to be cleared, but no immediate promise of a job, and recruiters still want job-ready candidates. We are all so busy following the norm that we spend our whole lives trying to climb a tree when we are meant to be swimming in the ocean.
If engineering is where your passions lie then you needn't look far; the country has premier educational institutions to offer to its citizens. It is a fact that Indian institutions aren't featured in the global rankings and even the premier institutions fail to make the cut, however, one must understand the difference between a viable option and fantasy. Our country's engineering institutions have produced names in the world of technology and business that have reshaped the industry. Indian institutions have tied up with some of the best organizations in the Indian market. They are in constant pursuit to fulfill what the industry requires of them by updating their pedagogy and installing state-of-the-art infrastructure. It is a fact that there are many more milestones to be crossed and we are far from where we should be but, the path that we are on is one of progress. This issue of Higher Education Review celebrates that progress with its features on Engineering College of the Year, 2014. The features speak of institutions that are making progress in their areas of expertise.
We have also prepared a special feature on BITS Pilani, where we have conversed with all the change makers in the university to understand what makes BITSian a tag that ever young engineering graduate desires.
We hope that this proves beneficial to you.
