Effective Collaborations: New Delhi Institute of Management

HER Team
Upholding the Founders' Vision

Suresh Prabhu, the current Railway Minister of India in the Modi Government, is not only armed with best education, understanding of the global realities, and high integrity but also with delivered milestones. As an all India rank holding Chartered Accountant equipped with a degree in Law, Suresh Prabhu is amongst admirable names in public life with zest for academics. Hence, when he sits on the chair as one of the board directors of New Delhi Institute of Management (NDIM), he deals with issues other than bureaucracy. He becomes an educationalist and a mentor in the board room of NDIM, contemplating and discussing the globalization of education with other board members who are equally celebrated names from the Industry, Corporate World, Academia and the Government of India.

While leaders like Suresh Prabhu, Justice BP Singh (former-Judge Supreme Court of India), TKA Nair (Former Secretary in the office of 3 Prime Ministers), Padma Vibhushan Air Chief Marshal O.P Mehra, B.B. Tandon (former Chief Election Commissioner), Mahesh Gupta (Chairman of Kent RO Systems) and D. N. Khurana (Secretary General of Asia Association of Management Organizations) make NDIM's Board rich with varied experience; 107 top academic and industry experts like Arbind Prasad, Director General, FICCI; Brij Chandiramani, Co-founder and Director, Rubicon Systems; Brijesh Agrawal, Co-Founder and Director, Indiamart; C.P. Gurnani, CEO & MD, Tech Mahindra; Dhananjay Singh, Executive Director, National HRD network; Dong Sung Pak, Managing Director, Hyosung Corporation India PVT. Ltd; Dr. Ullrich Guenther, Professor in Business Psychology, University of Lueneburg, Germany bring vast industry and academic experience to the institute's Academic Advisory discussions.

"We are very fortunate to have some of the best people from bureaucracy, industry and academia to lead NDIM's Board and Advisory Council and to help us compete with the global Ivy league b-schools. These highly acclaimed achievers associate with us because of the legendary figures who founded NDIM in 1992," says Chairman of NDIM Prof V.M. Bansal. Founders being J R Bansal (Ex-Member UPSC, Ex-Chairman, Punjab Public Service Commission, Ex-Chairman, Recruitment Boards, NABARD & STC), Justice RS Sarkaria (Former Judge, Supreme Court, Ex-Chairman Prasar Bharti, Chairman Sarkaria Commission), Dr. ML Sahare (Former Chairman, UPSC), RK Kaul (Former Deputy Governor, RBI), Kumar Bimal Sinha (ex Vice-chancellor and Chairman Bihar Public Service Commission), Suresh Mathur IAS, SS Dhanoa IAS and RK Tikku IAS (Former Secretaries, Govt. of India), NDIM was born with a unique set of strengths.

Unlike several management institutes that have come up after the economic liberalization in the country, NDIM is not a business venture. Chairman Bansal says, "NDIM was set up by the great achievers who led several prominent government and public sector organizations and had seen the world from the top. The founders, who have been the role models for 5 decades for different generations, set up NDIM 23 years back as their humble pay back to the society. They set up NDIM as an education centre to benchmark with the best MBA schools of the world. It is this vision and mission which has continued ever since and makes NDIM stand out from the crowd. It is the recognition of this uniqueness by the corporate world which attracts the biggest names to associate with the NDIM. It is because of our total commitment to quality that the Chairman UPSC Prof DP Agrawal, CMD NTPC Arup Roy Choudhary and Advisor & Principal Secretary to Prime Minister (2004-2014) TKA Nair decided to lead the NDIM team as directors on its Board within a month of their retirement."

"India's education system has become certificate oriented with majority of students concentrating only on theory to score high marks in written exams. Here at NDIM, only 50 percentage of the score is devoted to exams and remaining evaluation is based on students performance beyond the classroom activities. Their continuous assessment is based on a host of parameters", explains Prof Bansal while talking about the ongoing challenges faced by today's higher education sector. To make students ready for the industry; the institute seeks active participation from the industry through 74 full time faculty who have worked with 191 Industrial and business houses across the world before joining NDIM. "We have hosted over 800 senior professionals from the industry at the campus during the last 12 months which seems a tall claim. This not only provides students with great experience but also an opportunity for learning for our faculty members" claims Prof Bansal.

Today, NDIM has emerged as one of the best B-Schools in the country because of its strong industry interface, continuous corporate connect of the students, and 100 percent placements year on year basis - a partial fulfillment of the dream that has been scripted by the founders 23 years ago. Prof. Bansal, a former civil servant, who has represented the Govt. of India at highest international forums in more than 18 countries, is well aware of the way forward for the institute. He concludes, "Grooming students to become the best-requires knowledge of the skill gaps, having right people to plug the gaps, and commitment in the team to be the best. Hence, opening more colleges is not on our agenda as it will divert us from our single minded commitment of providing finest opportunities to our students to become global leaders." "Vast International opportunities and 120 international projects in ten countries during the last two years have made NDIM students standout and groom to global standards, and our immediate mission is to tap the existing opportunities for our existing students and the alumni rather than opening more colleges " says the Chairman VM Bansal.
