Established in 1970 as a not-for-profit society, IFMR was sponsored by ICICI, the House of Kotharis and other major industrial groups. The institute is recognized as an institution of national importance by the Ministry of Finance and as a Scientific and Research Institution by the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India.
