Globalization has revolutionized the whole concept of a classroom in India, making it more student centric. Students now have opportunities to interact and impart a holistic understanding of the concepts being introduced to them. "Different kinds of concepts and the main devices that we use are smart boards along with video, audio recording, video conferencing, 2d 3d graphics. We also have a projector connected with a smart board which enables anybody at any location to deliver a lecture with students distributed in different classrooms. There can be multiple teachers from all over the world involved in a session," says Dr. J.K.R Sastry, Professor and Head, Campus Management System, K.L. University, Vijayawada, who implements the Interactive Communication Technology,(ITC).
This technology has given a whole new definition to the concept of teaching at K.L. University in Andhra Pradesh. Using devices such as the smart boards enables teachers to display video, animation, write in their own handwriting and capture questions asked by the students and answers given by the teachers. For every subject that is being taught, 'competency delivery' is kept in mind. Rather than just simple 'knowledge transfer' and teaching simple basic concepts to students the concept of competency delivery is used. His intentions are about creating an ambiance where a student can become a person who is able to be self taught and imbibe the habit of curiosity even if he or she has left their educational institution. These new radical approaches have definitely given a qualitative education to his students as opposed to what was there six years ago.
As an educator he has realized that involving the student in the learning process, making them practice oriented and student participation in the activities conducted in the various educational programs play a vital role in breaking the monotony of the curriculum. Dr. Sastry in turn creates an atmosphere of a mutual interaction, making the student confident even in basic and simple concepts. For example he puts out a query to the class, which is then delegated to a student who is to present a seminar with peers having the liberty to ask questions, basically bringing an involvement of his students in the teaching process. In turn the results prove a fast paced learning with minimal effort. The professor also assigns multiple projects coupled with faculty guidance giving students the incentive to work harder owing to their curiosity. Other practical methods include Term papers as well as laboratory exercises.
"Without ICT the lectures would become mundane and stereotypical, instead its inclusion allows facilities like the pre uploading of the lecture in ppt format on the website which can be downloaded prior to the class sessions," says the professor. It enables the students to be able to bounce their opinions and doubts with more confidence as they are already briefed.
The advent of the reformation of educational methodologies has become a game changer for students in the time of recruitment. With the industry looking for personnel who are confident to apply basic concepts without confusion, impeccable communication skills and practical experience; students have the prerequisites to fulfill the aforesaid criterion through his efforts. Dr. Sastry further noted that the placement arena has become more stringent in including students with professional work etiquette and curiosity for innovation. Other norms like speed and accuracy have automatically been included in the curriculum itself.
