Pragmatic Education: Eternal University
Located in the southeastern part of Himachal Pradesh, Sirmour district is largely mountainous and rural, with 90 percent of its population living in villages.Agriculture is the backbone of rural masses here and farmers of Sirmour grow potato, garlic, peas, tomato, ginger and tons of fruits every year. However, the people of Sirmour were deprived of quality higher education until Eternal University established in 2009, under the aegis of Kalgidhar Trust with the visionary idea of Baba Iqbal Singh Ji, M.Sc. (Agriculture) and Ex-Director Agriculture, Himachal Pradesh. "Our aimis to provide value based education for creating universal brotherhood and world peace. We also work for the upliftment of this remote region through education, health, agriculture and conservation of environment," says Dr. H. S. Dhaliwal, Vice Chancellor, Eternal University.
Since its inception, the university has made remarkable growth in academics, infrastructure development and providing knowhow to the predominantly rural people of Sirmour district. The colleges of Engineering& Technology, Agriculture, Basic Sciences, Health and Allied Sciences, Arts and Social Sciences, Education and Economics, Management and Commerce are its pillars. "Highly competent faculty, quality teaching, research and extension are our backbone. The founder Vice Chancellor, Dr. Manmohan Singh Atwal along with 74 faculty members and 30 visiting professors gave us a strong foundation and commitment," claims Dr. Dhaliwal. At present, the total faculty positions in the constituent colleges of the university are 121. About 50 percent faculty members of Eternal University are women and nearly half of the faculty members have doctorate degrees.
At the Eternal University, all the research projects have been designed, keeping in view the research and extension needs of the region and the multidisciplinary facilities available. "Our research initiative would minimize the regional imbalances by uplifting the economic conditions and improving the health standards of the population of the region," opines Dr. Dhaliwal. While, various externally funded and submitted projects provide a quick highlight of research activities of the university, the management is keen on revising the course curriculum based on requirement of academia and industry."We have already revised and designed new curriculum of B.Tech, Food Tech., B.Sc. Agriculture, and various B.Sc. (Hons.) Degrees. As per the vision "2030" of Eternal University, the syllabi of all degree programs will be revised as per the industry requirement a routine procedure," explains Dr. Dhaliwal.
As a part of course curriculum at all undergraduate degree programs, Eternal University has introduced a course "Human Values and Professional Ethics" from academic session 2014-15, to create awareness and sensitize the students about ethical values and their responsibility as educated human resource to society welfare. "We have prepared "The EU Vision-2030" document, reflecting the mission of this vibrant institution and its commitment to accomplish goals in the areas of teaching, research, extension education and technology transfer to meet the expectations of Himachal Pradesh in general and Sirmour district in particular," concludes Dr. Dhaliwal.
