A Pledge to Focus on Students Holisitic Development

RMK Engineering College has been consistently providing its students with quality education, good placements and instilling a strong sense of responsibility towards a clean and green environment.

An emerging trend today among tech and engineering students are willingness and active interest in working beyond college hours; in online technical forums to improve their programming and other technical skills, networking with peers and professionals in technology areas and participating in meet ups. The participation of students in such forums improves their technical and practical skills and knowledge in latest trends in the industry. These skills are then used in creating tangible outputs like mobile apps or even working in small firms to garner experience. Recognizing that students are motivated today, RMK Engineering College, Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu has made it a priority to provide access to opportunities to all the students.

As universities revise the curriculum once every five years this is the first aspect that the college has focused on. The Centres of Excellence in all the branches of engineering has been created, which is a collaboration of the College with various corporate bodies. This provides students with experiential learning as well as strengthens the relationship of the College with the industry. To name a few, Product Life Cycle Management (PLM) Lab by Infosys, Mobility Lab by Cognizant, and Big Data Lab by iNautix. The college has also invested in Labs with latest technology equipments and software with partial funding by the corporate partners so that students learn the latest technology topics and also have hands-on experience. The college also understands that education is no longer limited to the classrooms.

e-learning through online courses is now common. Thus the college is staying updated by institutionalizing the eLearning process as a part of the regular curriculum. In addition, students are encouraged to take up various specific eLearning courses that are not a part of the syllabus but are prescribed by faculty members in consultation with industry experts. Some examples are NPTEL, Spoken Tutorials by IIT Mumbai, Coursera, CodeChef and HackerRank. This rigorous attention to curriculum prepares students for their future careers.

Another aspect the college focuses is on placement. Some of the finest companies in the industry including Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro and Siemens are regular recruiters. This is because the college has taken steps to provide skilled and competent students consistently. Placement Officers, Heads of Departments and faculty members attend workshops and other forums conducted by the industry. They in turn, through their experiential learning, provide technical knowledge to the students, to bridge the gap between academia and industry. The college has signed a number of MoUs with many companies directly and through their Centres of Excellence. Companies such as IBM, CISCO and Wipro among many others are in the list of MoUs of the institute, fostering a healthy relationship with the industry. Another way the students are being given added training is through project work. Some of these projects include e-Kart (an electrical car with environment friendly technology) and Medical Electronics using iOT principles of Mobility and Wireless Sensors. The students are graded for these projects.

To develop in the learners high personal and professional ethical values, technical competence and a spirit of entrepreneurship is one of the missions of the college. Already accredited by the AICTE, this institute has introduced the entrepreneurship program called the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centre (IEDC). This is being promoted to develop institutional mechanism to create entrepreneurial culture to foster techno-entrepreneurship. The IEDC works with agencies like MSME, TiE, and NEN. In the academic year of 2014-2015 alone, five projects were successfully completed. So far two start-ups are being run in the institute.

Beyond being an educational institute this college has been awarded the Clean and Green Campus by the Rotary Club of Chennapatna. The college, in continuing its commitment towards preserving the environment, has taken on water harvesting projects, organic farming and waste water recycling extensively. With funding from TEDA, the college has set up an energy park which uses solar energy for pumping water and for some lighting. These projects have been taken up along with the students and this gives them invaluable experience in working on real global issues and problems.
