RN Shetty Institute of Technology: Touching the Peak of Learning Curve
Year 2006 marked the celebration year for Pallavi Karnath as she secured second rank in Computer Science and Engineering degree from Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka. She created a benchmark in the history of her alma mater, R.N. Shetty Institute of Technology (RNSIT). Although RNSIT was in an early stage of its journey, the institute showed real potential from the second batch of students with Pallavi Karnath as frontrunner. From 2006, the years ahead saw a sharp rise in the number of rank holders from this institute. The institute has so far produced more than 30 academic achievers.
At present, many students of RNSIT are facing a dilemma. Almost 283 eligible candidates from 2014 batch have received 470 offers. It means, on an average, a student has more than one offer. "Many of our students receive more than one offer even before we complete our entire placement drives. We still encourage them to attend more interviews so that they will get a better picture of what industries are looking for," says Dr. Shivashankar, Director, RNSIT.
Accenture, Infosys, Wipro, Microsoft India, Delloitte, HP, Aryaka Networks, IBM, GE India, Sankalp semiconductor and Cognizant are some of the companies that have selected their future engineers from this campus. The package offered for students range from 4 lakhs to 24 lakhs. It is a mere example to show how RNSIT has become one of the most preferred engineering institutes for students as well as corporate giants in a short span of time.
Karnath says, "When I passed out from the college and employed in Bosch, through various interactions with my colleagues who are from other colleges, I realized that my college had a unique academics culture. The institute always tried to blend the academics with the industry." The institute offers industry electives and conduct industry visits. This provides an opportunity for students to understand the workings ofthe industry even before they get placed in the corporate world. Placement report of RNSIT shows the direct reflection of this approach as the institute has achieved more than 90 percent placements every year. The growth that RNSIT has achieved in few years is truly spectacular. The management states that there is no secret behind their success and all they have been doing was enforcing the discipline in all levels of education. It is something that is missing in our postmodern engineering colleges. "We keep everything transparent and simple to our students. Our focus is always on completing 100 percent syllabus before academic year comes to an end and to provide more than 20 percent of knowledge other than the curriculum describes," says Dr. Shivashankar.
From his vast experience in education sphere, Dr. Shivashankar points out that the quality of any academic institution depends on the cross product of knowledge and experience that the faculties possess. Accordingly, the management has created ample environment for the teachers by encouraging them to undertake research activities as well as further qualifications. Thus, the institute has the least attrition rate, which is below five percent. Apart from teaching, the faculties are also responsible for monitoring and counseling the students. This helps students with different levels of academic abilities.RNSIT receives around 660 vibrant students from various parts of the country to their graduate courses.
For an enthusiastic learner, RNSIT provides more than graduation course.Students can extend their knowledge by acquiring an MBA degree or a master's degree in engineering, which includes few courses belonging to the computer science and electronics branch. Post Graduation is not a full stop in the learning curve of this institute. They traverse further by providing research programs in the fields of Computer Science, Electronics and Communication, Instrumentation Technology, Chemistry, Physics, and Business Administration.
All set for a new horizon
Located at Bangalore, the silicon valley of India, RNSIT has already marked its presence in the technical education sector. The institute believes that it is the ideal time for next set of expansions. As part of infrastructural development, the management is planning to build auditoriums, administrative blocks and library building in addition to the existing substructures. The students can also experience add-ons such as CAT, GRE, GATE trainings and more industry interactions along with national and international conferences in the upcoming years. The management of RNSIT has witnessed many ups and downs from the time of its inception in 2001. At present, the founders have a smile of satisfaction on their face as they created a platform, which made hundreds of faces like Karnath to smile even brighter by giving hands to touch the peak of their learning curve.
