IIT Bombay to Open First Overseas Campus in the US

Synopsis: IIT Bombay launches its first overseas sub-campus in the US with SUNY Old Westbury, focusing on AI, sustainability, and clean technology courses while expanding global education and research opportunities.
The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has just announced its first, kind of overseas sub-campus in the United States which is, honestly, a big move for the institute’s global expansion plan. This new place is being developed in collaboration with the State University of New York (SUNY) at Old Westbury, and it looks like the whole purpose is to bolster academic work, research efforts, and even innovation ties between India and the US.
The whole initiative kicks off by setting up an engineering education wing over at the SUNY Old Westbury campus in Long Island, New York, a sort of new hub. IIT Bombay also intends to roll out certificate courses starting 2027 and maybe, if things line up, move into full-fledged degree programmes later. Those programmes are expected to welcome students coming from India, the US, and a few other nations too.
The partnership leans into developing fields like artificial intelligence, environmental sustainability, and clean tech. With these academic offerings, IIT Bombay is trying to give learners deeper technical competence that matches what the wider industry expects. As part of the same collaboration there are also intentions for joint research work, faculty exchanges, and the building of fresh learning pathways in science, and engineering areas.

The agreement between IIT Bombay and SUNY Old Westbury gets formalized via a Letter of Intent signed by people representing both institutions. In practice the partnership opens doorways for students, and researchers to reach international academic resources while also nudging cross-border knowledge exchange, plus fresh innovation.
IIT Bombay officials say the overseas sub-campus is kind of a big milestone, because the institute will end up delivering its academic programmes directly on US soil. And it’s not really the same as a usual exchange programme or joint degrees, this step makes it possible for IIT Bombay to build a more stronger international academic presence, sort of right there in practice.
Choosing to team up with an already existing university instead of making its own separate campus lets IIT Bombay kind of stay focused on academic growth, and also sidesteps the rather long processes tied to grabbing land and getting all the approvals lined up. At the same time, SUNY Old Westbury gets something from the deal too, because it can widen its range of programs, especially those centered on engineering, and technology related education.
The new sub campus kind of reflects India’s growing attention to internationalising higher education and making global partnerships. It also somehow backs the need for trained experts in fast moving areas, like AI sustainable technologies, and advanced engineering, which are getting bigger each year.
By going through this expansion, IIT Bombay tries to widen its global reach, form fresh research collaborations, and ready students for chances in a more tightly connected, technology led world.
