The Indian Institute of Management Mumbai (IIM Mumbai), in partnership with the International Institute of Sports & Management (IISM), has introduced a new Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Management (PGDSM) aimed at preparing professionals for India’s rapidly expanding sports industry. The one-year programme will follow a blended learning format and is designed to equip participants with both managerial knowledge and specialized sports sector expertise.

The PGDSM programme targets working professionals, aspiring sports managers, entrepreneurs, and former athletes who wish to build careers in the sports business ecosystem. The curriculum combines fundamental management principles with sports-specific subjects such as sports marketing, league and event management, sponsorship strategies, governance, sports analytics, media relations, finance, operations, and infrastructure development.

Structured as a 12-month course, the programme will be delivered through a hybrid model that includes weekend online lectures along with four mandatory campus immersion modules at IIM Mumbai. Participants will engage in practical learning through industry case studies, simulation exercises, mentorship from experienced professionals, and projects that address real-world sports management challenges.

The initiative also aligns with India’s long-term ambition to host major international sporting events, including the 2036 Summer Olympics. By developing skilled professionals in sports management, the programme aims to contribute to building a strong talent pipeline capable of supporting the growth and professionalization of the country’s sports ecosystem.

Commenting on the launch, Nilesh Kulkarni, Founder-Director of IISM, said the collaboration marks an important step in advancing sports education in India. He noted that the partnership combines IIM Mumbai’s academic strength with IISM’s deep industry connections to create a platform that nurtures ethical, capable, and future-ready sports leaders.
