Education Loans in India - The Complete Student Guide

Expenses covered under Education Loans

Many students have the impression that education loans are meant to cater to tuition fees alone. However, this is not the case because most of the lenders provide financial assistance towards a wide range of costs.

These costs can be those relating to tuition fees, examination costs, laboratory costs, library costs, books, equipment, hostels, projects, travelling, and insurance costs among others.

Eligibility Criteria

Each institution has their own set of policies, but there are a few policies that are common among all institutions. The applicants are usually required to be Indian citizens who have been admitted to a known institution based on their eligibility. Their academic achievements, the reputation of the institution, and the financial status of the co-applicant are also taken into consideration while evaluating the application. Sometimes, the lender checks for the creditworthiness and repayment capacity of the applicant.

Documents Required

Documentation is essential in this process because inaccurate or incomplete documentation may lead to delays in application and, in some instances, the application may be rejected. For students, they need to submit proofs of their identities, address, pictures, admission letters, academic credentials, fee structures, income proofs, bank details, and documents that are tax-related. By organizing these documents, one will find the whole process very easy.

Secured and Unsecured Education Loans

Educational loans can usually be categorized into secured loans and unsecured loans.

In a secured loan, collateral must be provided by the borrower. The collateral could be in the form of property, fixed deposit, or any other asset. Secured loans tend to have lower interest rates and higher amounts of money that can be borrowed.

Unsecured loans do not need the borrower to provide any collateral. Although the process of approval is quick, the interest rates on unsecured loans tend to be comparatively higher.
