Education Loans in India - The Complete Student Guide
Education Loan Interest Rates
Interest rates have a big part to play in determining the total cost of borrowing. Interest rates are offered by lenders either fixed or floating, according to their policies.
There are several factors that determine the rate ultimately offered to an applicant, such as academic achievement, institutions of choice, program of choice, amount to be borrowed, and even the financial status of the co-applicant.
Students are advised to compare multiple lenders and loan options before making a final decision.
“Education loans should carry the lowest possible interest rates so that every Indian family, regardless of financial background, can afford quality education without excessive debt. The current situation in the education sector is becoming increasingly challenging, with rising uncertainty around career opportunities placing additional pressure on students and parents.
As a result, education loans risk becoming a means of generating profits rather than supporting students' aspirations. At the same time, the quality and accessibility of government-funded education appear to be declining in several areas, leading many families to rely on private institutions.
Private educational institutions often charge significantly higher tuition fees, making higher education unaffordable for many without borrowing. This growing dependence on education loans places a long-term financial burden on young graduates. Strengthening public education, regulating tuition fees, and ensuring affordable education loans with minimal interest are essential steps to make higher education accessible, equitable, and beneficial for India's future generations,” says Sudarshan Chavan, Dean ACR IIT Bombay.
Government Support and Subsidy Schemes
Several schemes have been launched by the government to facilitate higher education. Some schemes help financially weak students through grants whereas some schemes are aimed at providing interest subsidies during certain periods.
All these schemes are meant to lighten the financial burden of the students and promote higher education. Eligibility requirements for these schemes can help students take wise financial decisions.
"An education loan, when augmented with financial literacy, institutional guidance, and a strong academic structure, is a key driver for social progress, innovation, and inclusive growth." It empowers young minds to transform their aspirations into meaningful contributions to society through knowledge, entrepreneurship, and leadership”.
The PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme and Portal, launched by the Government of India, is a major step towards democratizing and institutionalizing access to higher education and is in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The education loan process is made simpler, faster, and more accessible by the provision of a transparent technology-based single-window interface that connects students with multiple lenders, ensuring that financial constraints are no barrier to academic success.
Every education loan extended to a deserving student strengthens India's talent pool, fosters innovation, enhances global competitiveness, and contributes to building a resilient, self-reliant, and developed nation in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047,” states Jabir Ali, Dean Faculty and Research, Indian Institute of Management Jammu.

Education Loans for Studying Abroad
More Indian students are opting to study abroad in countries like the United States, the UK, Canada, Germany, Australia, and Singapore.
The education loans that can be taken for pursuing education abroad would include the costs for tuition fees, traveling, housing, health insurance, etc.
Students need to analyze the factors of exchange rates, payment of loan installments, as well as employment opportunities after completion of studies abroad.
