GATE 2027 Adds Robotics Paper, IIT Madras Shares Schedule

Synopsis: IIT Madras announces the GATE 2027 examination schedule, introduces a new Robotics and Automation paper, revises the syllabus after five years, and implements DigiLocker-based registration with facial authentication to strengthen the examination process.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has announced the schedule for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027, introducing several significant changes aimed at aligning the examination with evolving academic and industry requirements. Along with releasing the examination dates, the institute has unveiled a new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper, revised the syllabus across disciplines after five years, and introduced enhanced registration measures to improve the examination process.

GATE 2027 will be conducted as a computer-based test on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, and 21, 2027, in multiple sessions across designated examination centres in India and abroad. The online registration process is expected to commence in the second week of August 2026, with candidates required to complete their applications through the official GATE 2027 portal. IIT Madras has also introduced DigiLocker-based registration with facial authentication to strengthen identity verification and enhance the security of the examination process.

One of the most notable updates is the introduction of the Robotics and Automation (RA) paper, reflecting the growing importance of robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, and intelligent manufacturing across industries. With the addition of the new paper, candidates interested in emerging interdisciplinary fields will have an opportunity to demonstrate specialised knowledge relevant to next-generation engineering applications.

IIT Madras has also revised the GATE syllabus across multiple subjects for the first time in five years to ensure that the examination remains aligned with current technological advancements and industry expectations. In another structural change, the Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) paper has been converted into a sectional paper under Engineering Sciences (XE), streamlining the examination structure and offering greater flexibility for candidates.

GATE serves as one of India's premier national-level examinations for admission to postgraduate programmes in engineering, technology, architecture, science, and humanities at IITs, IISc, NITs, and other participating institutions. The examination is also widely accepted by Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) for recruitment to technical positions and by several international universities for higher education opportunities. The updated examination framework is expected to better equip candidates for evolving academic and professional requirements.
