IIM Calcutta Innovation Park, AIMK Join Hands to Boost Startups

IIM Calcutta Innovation Park and Army Institute of Management Kolkata have partnered to strengthen West Bengal’s startup ecosystem through incubation, mentorship, innovation challenges and a proposed DST NIDHI Maker Bhavan.

IIM Calcutta Innovation Park (IIMCIP) has partnered with the Army Institute of Management Kolkata (AIMK) to strengthen entrepreneurship, innovation and startup development in West Bengal. The collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to combine AIMK’s academic ecosystem with IIMCIP’s incubation expertise to create a structured platform for aspiring entrepreneurs and emerging ventures.

Under the partnership, the two institutions will jointly promote startup creation, innovation-led entrepreneurship and industry-academia collaboration. The initiative will include outreach and capacity-building programmes designed to develop entrepreneurial capabilities among students, innovators and aspiring founders.

A key component of the collaboration is the proposed establishment of a DST NIDHI Maker Bhavan at the AIMK campus, subject to approval from the Department of Science and Technology. AIMK is expected to allocate approximately 3,500-5,000 square feet for the facility. The proposed infrastructure will include a fabrication laboratory, startup co-working spaces and meeting rooms, providing entrepreneurs with facilities to develop and test products and prototypes.

The partnership will extend beyond physical infrastructure through a range of joint incubation and innovation programmes. IIMCIP and AIMK plan to conduct co-incubation initiatives, mentor clinics and long-term startup cohorts, while also undertaking startup scouting and innovation challenges. These programmes are intended to create stronger pathways for promising ideas to progress from early-stage development to commercially viable enterprises.

Industry engagement will form another important element of the collaboration. The institutions will facilitate interactions between startups and industry stakeholders while exploring opportunities for collaborative research and development. Faculty development initiatives will also be undertaken to strengthen institutional capabilities in entrepreneurship education and innovation management.

The partnership comes as IIMCIP continues to expand its network of institutional collaborations across India. Its recent initiatives include partnerships focused on rural entrepreneurship, sustainability, social impact and regional startup ecosystems. The organisation has also been working with universities, technology incubators and government agencies to create structured incubation pathways for early-stage and growth-oriented ventures.

For West Bengal, the collaboration could provide an additional institutional channel for connecting academic talent with mentors, industry networks and startup support infrastructure. By combining experiential learning with incubation and market-oriented support, the initiative is expected to strengthen the pipeline of innovation-driven enterprises emerging from the region.

The partnership ultimately aims to build a sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem that encourages knowledge exchange, supports innovation-led businesses and contributes to broader economic development through startup creation and industry collaboration.
