NIT Patna PhD Admissions 2026 Open, Check Eligibility Criteria

NIT Patna invites applications for PhD admissions under the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for July–December 2026. Eligible candidates can apply online until October 25, with selection through screening and interview.
The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Patna invites applications for admission to its PhD programme under the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for Electronics and IT for the July–December 2026 session. Eligible candidates can apply online through the institute’s official admission portal.
The last date to submit the application form and pay the prescribed fee is October 25, 2026. The programme offers opportunities in areas related to Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) and Information Technology/IT-enabled Services.

Candidates holding an MTech, ME or equivalent degree are required to have secured at least 6.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale or 60 per cent marks from a recognised technical institute or university.
Candidates with a BTech, BE, MCA or equivalent qualification are required to have first-class marks. Where the institute does not specify a class, applicants must have at least 60 per cent marks or a 6.5 CGPA, along with a valid GATE, UGC-NET or CSIR-NET score. The requirement applies to candidates from the Computer Science and Engineering branch.
The minimum academic requirement is relaxed by 0.5 CGPA or five percentage points for candidates belonging to the SC, ST and PwD categories. Applicants must provide proof of their valid qualifying examination score. Sponsored candidates are exempt from the GATE or NET requirement.
Admission is based on the prescribed eligibility criteria followed by a screening test and/or selection interview conducted by the concerned department or centre.
The screening test carries 100 marks. General, EWS and OBC candidates must secure at least 40 per cent to qualify, while the qualifying threshold is 35 per cent for SC, ST and PwD candidates. The syllabus is based on the relevant GATE or NET syllabus.
Shortlisted candidates appear for a 100-mark interview assessing subject knowledge, research aptitude and understanding of the proposed research area. The final merit list is prepared based on interview performance and seat availability.

Under the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme, NIT Patna offers two seats in Electronics and IT-related areas: one full-time seat with fellowship support and one part-time seat without the full-time fellowship. Eligible departments include Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.
The application fee is ₹1,500 for General, OBC and EWS candidates and ₹750 for SC, ST and PwD candidates. The first-semester academic fee is ₹59,750, excluding hostel and mess charges.
