Renault India Partners IIT Kanpur for Vehicle R&D Initiative

Synopsis: Renault India has partnered with IIT Kanpur to enhance vehicle research and development by using the institute's National Wind Tunnel Facility for advanced aerodynamic and wind-noise testing of future passenger vehicles.
Renault India has entered into a strategic partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur to strengthen its vehicle research and development capabilities in India. The collaboration will leverage IIT Kanpur's National Wind Tunnel Facility (NWTF) to conduct advanced aerodynamic and wind-noise testing, supporting the development of future passenger vehicles tailored for both domestic and international markets.
The partnership is formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that establishes a comprehensive framework for commercial collaboration, intellectual property management, and confidentiality. The agreement is designed to ensure transparent cooperation while enabling both organisations to jointly advance automotive engineering and innovation.
Under the collaboration, Renault India will utilise IIT Kanpur's state-of-the-art wind tunnel infrastructure to perform sophisticated aerodynamic assessments and wind-noise evaluations on its passenger vehicles. These tests play a critical role in improving vehicle stability, fuel efficiency, energy performance, passenger comfort, and overall driving dynamics. Enhanced aerodynamic design also contributes to reducing drag, improving vehicle performance, and lowering emissions, making it an essential aspect of modern automobile development.

Commenting on the partnership, Vikraman V, Chief of Engineering at Renault Group India, said the collaboration represents an important step in strengthening the company's engineering capabilities in India. He noted that combining Renault's global engineering expertise with IIT Kanpur's world-class research infrastructure will accelerate the development of future-ready vehicles and reinforce the company's innovation-driven approach.
Representing IIT Kanpur, Alakesh Chandra Mandal, Coordinator of the National Wind Tunnel Facility and faculty member in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, highlighted that the partnership demonstrates the versatility of the facility beyond its traditional aerospace applications. He said the collaboration provides an opportunity to apply advanced aerodynamic research capabilities to the automotive sector while fostering industry-academia cooperation.
The initiative aligns with Renault Group's broader "futuREady India" strategy, which positions India as a key global hub for engineering, research, manufacturing, and exports. The company has announced plans to expand its engineering footprint, introduce new vehicle models, and strengthen India's role in its global innovation ecosystem over the coming years.
The collaboration also highlights the growing role of premier academic institutions in supporting industrial innovation through advanced research infrastructure.
