Named after the Greek philosopher Aristotle The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is a one of the largest universities in Greece. Located in the ancient city of Thessaloniki, just 55km east of Aristotle’s birthplace, Stagira, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is now organised across twelve separate faculties, offering a large and diverse academic portfolio. Comprising of 11 Faculties organized into 41 Schools, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki operates 41 bachelor degree and 68 master
degree programmes in individual Faculties and Schools, as well as interdisciplinary, inter-university and international. Furthermore, the institute has 23 collaborations with foreign universities for co-supervised Ph.D. for Greek and foreign doctoral candidates.

While the first department of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was Philosophy Faculty which opened its doors in 1926, this was quickly followed by a mathematics and science faculty in 1927. Today, the
institute has a strong international reputation and boasts a longstanding association with the international exchange Erasmus Programme. Affiliated with the university is the Institute of Modern Greek Studies that emphasizes on promoting education through its publishing arm that produces books in Greek language, philology and literature.
