Established in 1993, Başkent University is a non-profit foundation set up by Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal in collaboration with "The Turkish Organ Transplantation and Burns Treatment Foundation" and "The Haberal Education Foundation" in response to Turkey's need for preeminent higher education institutions. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal, the vanguard of many fields, has lots of firsts that are acclaimed by the World in his timeline of professional life. Based out of Ankara, the institute envisions being a home that provides high level education based on scientific production in every field of advanced medical practices as an international brand, and which transforms this to a social added value on the road to its rightful place in the line of modern civilization.

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal, the vanguard of many fields has a lot of firsts that have been acclaimed by the World in his timeline of professional life. There are numerous national and international institutions which have been awarded for Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal's hard work and succession on not only the medical field but also social fields including philanthropy and social responsibility. Also, most recently, Prof. Haberal has been awarded by the Spanish Order of the Civil Merit of the Kingdom of Spain on February 20, 2020.

Başkent University was set up by Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal with grand mastery of his vision to educate youth standing bound to Atatürk's principles, embracing science as their guidance and having a consciousness of global problems. As the first foundation university which emphasizes on teaching and serving health care simultaneously in Turkey, Başkent University aspires to raise analytical, innovative, and creative minds as selfevident truths and seeking science, sharing it in an objective manner for the benefit of humanity as well as the World while promoting the development of technological, socioeconomic, and cultural levels by conducting research and spreading science.

Being the first University in Turkey to receive the International Standardization Organization (ISO) certification, Başkent University is one of the leading universities across the World which vests its focus on promoting a student-centered education system along with a global perspective. Since 1993, the year Başkent University was founded, ‘Sourcing and Spreading Science by working seven days a week, 24 hours a day’, has been carried out as the motto of the University by all academic and administrative staff under the guidance of founder president Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal. As a result of this hard work, on the 25th anniversary, Başkent University celebrated an equally important success of becoming a bridge from Tokyo to Buenos

Aires via advanced health care practices and scientific researches. Differentiated from other institutions by its capacity to design programs and curricula according to the changing global demands, Başkent University aspires to become an apex in every area of the advanced health care practices with its high-quality education at international standards.

Today, Başkent University has 12 Faculties, a State Conservatory, 7 Institutes, 6 Vocational Schools, a Foreign Language School, 22 Research Centres, 1421 Academic staff, 8199 Administrative Staff members (58% Female & 42% Male) and around 15.359 students. Starting from day one, the academic/student ratio of the Faculty of Medicine remained as 1:1. Başkent University is the most significant health care institution after the Ministry of Health of Turkey with six full-fledged research hospitals, including dentistry centers, 16 dialysis centers, 9 outpatient clinics, a geriatric and psychosocial Rehabilitation Center, as well as a Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Center throughout Turkey.

Nationally and internationally, Başkent University is at the forefront in terms of research and quality teaching, carried on by its highly-qualified academic staff, and also in the dissemination of research results. While research, experimental production, and contribution to society have always been the main priorities, Faculty of Medicine was established as the first foundation Medical Faculty in Turkey with high-quality standards.

Envisioning Education for All
Başkent University is continuously striving to pursue its mission of qualified health care services by educating at all levels that can be demanded by hospitals, right from technical personnel to administrative staff. Today, the university is not only focusing on health sciences but also offers multiple programs on Social Sciences and Art. In respect to high demand of international students, Başkent University provides 100% English programs on Business Administration, Economics, International Relations and Political Sciences, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Sociology, Electric and Electronics, Civil and Mechanical Engineering.

With multiple national and international institutions awarding the quality of medical education and health care services of the institute, Başkent University has Faculty of Dentistry with 100% English education, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Health Sciences composing Nursing,

Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Social Work, Sport Sciences, Nutrition and Dietetics; these are all supported by Vocational Schools having programs on First Aid and Emergency Medicine, Technician education on Pathology, Dialysis, Operation Room Services, Medical Imaging and Anesthesia.

Başkent University has come a long way from being certified as an International Certification Network Certificate on Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001) to having continued with the accreditation of Medical Education of Başkent by the National Medical Education Federation (UTEAK). The European Union also recognized the internationalization of Başkent by giving the privilege of providing the Diploma Supplement Label which enables the equivalency of Başkent University globally. Besides, the Stress Management Research and Applications Unit jointly formed up with Harvard University, and the European Society of Gynecological Oncology accreditation proves the supremacy of the services of Başkent University furnished. As an influencer, Başkent has marked its name in the medical field by focusing on technological developments. Also, the usage of MR-Linac has been started at Başkent Ankara Hospital which is the latest technology of Oncological Treatments and happens to be used in just 19 countries all over the world.

As an International University, Başkent University has over 200 agreements with 30 countries. The students and academic staff are having motilities in the frame of these agreements. By welcoming 24 students and 43 staff in 2019 from Semey Medical University, Kazakhstan for training purposes within the span of the strategic partnership between the parties, Başkent University is sharing its experience not only through strategic partnerships but also with international projects. In 2018, the World Bank Project titled ‘Strategic partnership in the modernization of University management processes and training of specialists in orthopedics and traumatology, radiology/ nuclear medicine and emergency care’ has been offered to Başkent, and the project process has come to an end. Through the project implementation, the medical education of Semey Medical University has been modernized. In the years to come, Başkent University envisions serving the administration mentality along the lines of University mission, vision and principal values.

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal, Founder and Founder President
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal, MD, FACS (Hon), FICS (Hon), FASA (Hon), FIMSA (Hon) Hon FRCS (Glasg), is a world-renowned transplant and general surgeon. In 1975, Mehmet Haberal performed the first living-related kidney transplant in Turkey. Alongside his active career in organ transplantation and burn treatment, he was an early participant in the move to create private non-profit higher education institutions in Turkey by establishing Başkent University. He has dedicated the past 30 years to ensuring that Başkent University provides the highest standard of education and healthcare services on a national and international scale.
