Divine Institute Of Media Science (Dims Media College): Creating A Niche In Media Education With A Specialized Approach
Fr. Dr. Robin Xavier,Principal According to a report published by Mordor Intelligence, the media and entertainment industry has been estimated to have a net value of $27.72 billion in 2023 and is poised to achieve a net value of $40.36 billion by 2028.

There has been large-scale growth in content consumption over the last decade owing to an increase in the number of media platforms across the world and also because of huge social media penetration among people. We can see the emergence of many new-age filmmakers and media personalities working on various kinds of subjects to reach the audience at large.

As we are moving on, we are also witnessing a growing interest among the youth to learn media sciences that wasn’t there earlier which is evident from the rapid increase in the number of media outlets, especially over social media.

However, media studies, though being offered by various colleges and universities in the country lack specialization. We can see that media studies are being taught along with various other courses which is exactly why Divine Institute of Media Science (DIMS Media College) emerged in this market. The institution has created a niche for itself by offering courses that are only related to media sciences.

Operational Excellence
The college operates under Calicut University and teaches the syllabus that is prepared by the board at the university. Some of the faculty members are a part of the committee that suggests the formulation of the syllabus. In this regard, the college always tries to keep itself updated with the latest trends in this market and set the syllabus accordingly.
“The college always keeps room for improvement in the syllabus and we also have diploma courses that are offered apart from the graduation courses. These diploma courses are designed mostly according to the needs of candidates. Apart from diploma courses we also offer specialized courses on subjects like photography, film making and others”, mentions Sinoj Antony, Course Co-ordinator, Divine Institute of Media Science.

For every subject, there is a dedicated lab where students can materialize their ideas using the most advanced systems and with the guidance of the expert faculty. The college has an in-house theatre with a sitting capacity of 100 that is completely for the use of the students. As it constitutes many aspiring film and documentary makers, this setup aligns completely with the required type of education.

“Students can shoot their films, edit them in the editing labs, and visualize the final product that they have created on the big screen. Our institution also owns many cameras that can be used for this purpose and also an audio lab for sound editing purposes.

The faculty of our college is in full support of the students and helps them as much as they can.
We have many highly educated people who have also been a part of the media for many years as teachers. Some of them have PhD in media studies and the others have extended experience in the media industry”, says Sinoj.

Divine is associated with many reputable media organizations across South India which helps it with various internship opportunities for the students. During the graduation course, the students are facilitated with internships that make them understand the industry better. By the time a student finishes graduation from college the individual already has the required industry exposure and experience to be employed in a full-time job. Various well-known personalities of the film industry also visit the college to provide lectures to students. When it comes to placements, most of the students receive job opportunities from within the campus even before the completion of the course. The passed alumni also help the current candidates a lot in this regard.

Future Endeavors
The institution has gained considerable recognition in the field of media studies and students from all over the country are currently interested in pursuing media courses from here. Looking ahead, the college wants to add more specialized media courses to its curriculum and also increase the number of student intake in the coming years. “We will be starting four-year degree courses in a few years and have a more definitive curriculum at hand. As we see the opportunities in this sector growing, we want to evolve along with the trends and provide students with the best form of media education that can be available in the country”, concludes Sinoj.
