Faculty of Dental Sciences, SGT University: Advancing Excellence in Dental Education & Clinical Innovation

By Dr Sumit Singh Phukela, Dean

India’s medical education landscape has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past few decades, evolving from traditional classroom-based learning to a dynamic, technology-driven ecosystem. Medical and dental colleges across the country are increasingly focusing on integrating clinical exposure, research orientation, and global best practices into their academic frameworks.

This shift is driven by the growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals who can meet the challenges of a rapidly advancing healthcare system. Within this progressive environment, SGT Dental College Hospital & Research Institute, now known as the Faculty of Dental Sciences at SGT University has emerged as a significant contributor.

Established with a vision to create excellence in dental education, clinical care, and research, the institution has steadily strengthened its academic ecosystem. By combining innovation, ethical practice, and community outreach, it continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of dental education in India.

A Legacy of Excellence and Academic Evolution

Founded in 2002, SGT Dental College Hospital & Research Institute began with a clear mission: to nurture competent dental professionals equipped with both clinical expertise and a strong sense of social responsibility.

Over the years, the institution has evolved into a comprehensive academic hub, offering an environment that seamlessly blends theoretical learning with hands-on clinical training.

Spread across a sprawling campus of over 70 acres in Gurugram, Haryana, the institute has consistently invested in infrastructure, advanced technology, and academic collaborations. Its commitment to quality education and institutional growth was further validated with the achievement of NAAC A+ accreditation in 2023.

Today, the Faculty of Dental Sciences at SGT University stands as a modern, forward-looking institution that emphasizes research-driven education, interdisciplinary learning, and global exposure.

The Faculty of Dental Sciences offers a wide spectrum of programs designed to meet the diverse aspirations of students and the evolving needs of the healthcare industry

Comprehensive Academic Programs and Research Focus

The Faculty of Dental Sciences offers a wide spectrum of programs designed to meet the diverse aspirations of students and the evolving needs of the healthcare industry. At the undergraduate level, the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program provides a strong foundation in biomedical sciences and clinical dentistry.

Structured over five years, including a compulsory rotatory internship, the program ensures that students gain both academic knowledge and practical competence.

At the postgraduate level, the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) program spans all nine recognized dental specialties, enabling students to develop advanced clinical skills and specialize in their chosen fields. Complementing these programs are PhD opportunities across all branches of dentistry, fostering a culture of innovation and evidence-based research.

The institution further enhances academic rigor through fellowship programs and value-added courses in emerging domains such as digital dentistry, dental photography, infection control, and practice management.

By integrating research methodology and interdisciplinary collaboration into its curriculum, the institute ensures that students are well-prepared to contribute meaningfully to both academia and clinical practice.

Advanced Clinical Training and Technological Integration

The institution’s key strength lies in its strong focus on clinical exposure and experiential learning. Students engage with patient care early, progressing from observation to supervised practice and eventually independent procedures, building both confidence and clinical competence.

The Faculty of Dental Sciences incorporates advanced technologies such as CBCT imaging, CAD-CAM systems, implantology, and microscope-assisted endodontics into training. A 14,000 sq. ft. National Reference Simulation Center enhances skills through simulation-based training in basic and advanced life support.

Students also gain multidisciplinary exposure in areas like oncology, radiodiagnosis, and forensic sciences. The Smile Train Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery Centre, part of a global initiative, provides specialized surgical experience.

Community engagement is emphasized through partnerships with Reliance MET and rural dental camps under the Centre of Excellence for promoting oral health, fostering both practical skills and social responsibility.

Advanced treatment and research in implant science are supported by the Centre of Excellence for Oral and Maxillofacial Implantology, while SGT Dental Xpertz Clinic offers specialized care led by senior consultants.

Industry Alignment, Collaborations, and Career Pathways

The institution emphasizes strong industry alignment through collaborations with leading dental organizations, academic institutions, and healthcare companies. Partnerships with national and international universities contribute to curriculum development, research, and skill enhancement programs.

Students actively participate in workshops, national competitions, and research initiatives, including ICMR-supported projects. Each year, 45–50 workshops are conducted across various dental specialties.

In the past two years, the institute has secured 44 extramural grants, including 21 ICMR STS projects, and produced 526 publications in indexed journals with support from the University Research Cell.

Professional development is a key focus, with training in communication, emotional intelligence, and career readiness. The Centre of Excellence for Andragogical and Pedagogical Sciences promotes innovative teaching methods and faculty development through experiential and industry-linked learning.

The biannual journal, Current Trends in Dentistry highlights recent advancements in the field. Graduates have diverse career pathways: BDS graduates pursue clinical practice, higher studies, or public health, while MDS graduates enter specialized practice, academia, or research.

Strong industry connections and placement support further enhance opportunities in hospitals, corporate dental chains, and global healthcare organizations.

A Vision for the Future of Dental Education

Looking ahead, the Faculty of Dental Sciences at SGT University is committed to strengthening its position as a center of excellence in dental education and research. The institution aims to integrate emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence in diagnostics and treatment planning, expand digital dentistry workflows, and incorporate 3D printing into clinical and academic practices.

With a continued focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, research expansion, and community healthcare initiatives, the institute is poised to remain at the forefront of innovation. Its vision extends beyond academic excellence, aiming to develop compassionate healthcare professionals who can contribute to the advancement of oral healthcare both in India and globally.

In essence, Faculty of Dental Sciences exemplifies the transformation of dental education in India, where academic rigor, clinical innovation, and social responsibility converge to create future-ready healthcare leaders.
