Norm Brodsky College of Business: Shaping Career-Ready Leaders through Experiential and Entrepreneurial Education

By Eugene Kutcher, Dean

Business education across the globe is undergoing a period of rapid transformation, driven by shifting employer expectations, technological disruption, and an increasingly competitive job market.

In the present day, the issue for higher education institutions is whether to focus more on academic or practical relevancy and at the same time equip graduates to be career-ready immediately after graduation.

Experiential learning, digital skills, global exposure, and entrepreneurial thinking have been driven by a greater demand within organizations, where the need is to get professionals with the ability to adapt fast, think strategically and make responsible decisions.

Meanwhile, the business education market is steadily growing and is supported by the increased interest in management, analytics, entrepreneurship, and leadership programs on the global level.

Meeting these changing demands, the Norm Brodsky College of Business at Rider University has established itself as a business school that is career-oriented and combines excellence in academia with practical application. Rider University, situated in New Jersey, has over 160 years of education history behind business programs, with the College being established as one of the most solid academic pillars of the institution.

The College is named after renowned alumnus and businessman Norm Brodsky, the first reference in 2019 to reflect an entrepreneurial attitude that has promoted resiliency, innovation, ethical decision making and action-based learning as key success factors in contemporary business settings.

The origins of Norm Brodsky College of Business have a close connection with the larger history of Rider University, which was established in 1865 in order to offer practical education to Civil War veterans as they entered the labor force.

Even today, this purpose of workforce readiness has influenced the philosophy of the College. Rider alumnus Norm Brodsky (1964) later founded and sold several businesses of various types in industries including document storage, real estate, and fast-casual dining.

Outside the business world, he gained much acclaim as a mentor to up-and-coming entrepreneurs and as a thought leader in the entrepreneurship field.

Career-Focused Experiential Learning

At the core of the College’s academic approach is a strong emphasis on career preparation embedded directly into the curriculum. Based on the understanding, traditional career services are not fully used, the College mandates business students to take a special career planning course during the early stages of their studies.

“Our course enables the students to discover their talents, match majors to career objectives, explore industry opportunities, learn the earning power, and evaluate any other qualification criteria,” says Eugene Kutcher, Dean at Norm Brodsky College of Business.

It also emphasizes on such practical skills training as resume writing, professional communication, networking, ethical use of social media, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in career development.

Experiential learning is a defining feature of the Norm Brodsky College of Business. Business in Action is one of its initial programs which teach first-year students about entrepreneurship through practical experience. Startup funds are given to student teams, which are left to create and sustain a legitimate business within a single semester.

Students gain early experience in the reality of business decision making, product development and budgeting, marketing and collaboration. Mentors and judges are alumni and industry experts and the revenues go back to the program and are given to charitable organizations, strengthening the cause of social responsibility and a successful business.

Industry-Relevant Global Education

The college strengthens its curriculum differentiation through global exposure and interdisciplinary learning. Most of the students earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, gaining a broad foundation in accounting, finance, information systems, marketing, and management.

There are several international business programs that concentrate on cross cultural management, global markets and international entrepreneurship. Study abroad programs, international internships, and short-term international engagements allow the students to acquire a global mindset and become competent in a multicultural environment.

“We host a wide range of leadership programs, business societies, competitive student organizations, and skill building initiatives such as the DAARSTOC executive development program,” says Eugene Kutcher. Students participate in workshops on AI, ethics and compliance, networking, leadership communication, and data analysis.

The AACSB accreditation of the College serves as a reminder of its ideals of academic excellence, relevance to the industry, and improvement. Being one of the few business schools in the world to receive global accreditation, the Norm Brodsky College of Business fulfills stringent requirements in faculty level, curriculum relevance, research output, and student results.

The faculty members actively engage in research, collaboration with the industry, and innovation in teaching, which means students are taught by specialists who are not only academically successful but also professionally up-to-date.

Future-Focused Business Education

Looking ahead, the Norm Brodsky College of Business is developing its pedagogy by incorporating artificial intelligence, reinforces relationships in the industry, and redesigns its MBA program to emphasize how to solve real-world business problems.

Having a solid background in experiential learning, professional development and lifelong learning, the College continues to be dedicated to producing graduates, who think like owners, lead with integrity, and excel in a continuously changing global economy.
