Considered as the cultural capital of Hungary, Debrecen has been a prominent hub of culture, education and research. Debrecen is the largest city outside Budapest with more than 200,000 inhabitants. Hungary is a member of the European Union and at the crossroads of East and West, which is a very accessible location and an ideal base to explore all of Europe. At a convenient distance of 250 km to the East from the capital, Debrecen is a cultural, economic and scientific centre of the region and a renowned university town. One of Hungary’s oldest continuously running higher education institutions founded in 1538, the University of Debrecen has been playing a central role in education.
Operated jointly by the faculty, staff, and students, the University of Debrecen is committed to high quality and cooperation with Hungarian and international partners. “Continuously placed among the best 40 institutions by QS in its EECA (Eastern Europe and Central Asia) ranking every year since 2016, the University conducts its programs according to the European Qualifications Framework of the Bologna Process. Thus, diplomas attained at the University of Debrecen are generally accepted in the countries of the European Union.
Moreover, all our programs are accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Board which is part of the European Accreditation Board. Our medical programs are accredited by the WHO, the State Education Department (NY, USA), Medical Board of California, Medical Councils of India (a qualifying exam is compulsory), Israel, Ireland, Iran, Norway and the United Arab Emirates” states Prof. Attila Jenei, Director of the Coordinating Center for International Education at the University of Debrecen.
Offering more than 80 programs in the English language for international students, the University of Debrecen provides its graduates with a practical background and labormarket oriented knowledge far above the national average by involving them in practical work through partnerships with local and national companies. “As the University of Debrecen was established by merging of colleges and universities of Hajdú-Bihar county, a wide range of programs that cover almost all study fields from medicine through agriculture, IT and engineering to business are being offered by the university.
Our teaching faculty provides up-to-date knowledge to the students along with the main professional trends which are recognized on an international level as we ranked 151-200th in the Times Higher Education Europe Teaching Ranking. We participate in the StipendiumHungaricum Scholarship Programme, and we are proud to say that we are the most popular university in Hungary in the frame of this program. We also provide tuition fee reduction (from the second year on) to students with exceptional academic background” avers Attila Jenei.
Dedicated to developing and improving versatile and interdisciplinary education as well as research and development programs, the University of Debrecen is one of the largest higher education institutions in Hungary today with a student body of about 28,000. “Students who are seeking opportunities to pursue higher education abroad should consider the fact that this university has all the education tools you might need. There can be many reasons when you are looking but we should never forget that as international students we also need an afford-able and student-friendly city/country which most definitely Hungary in general.” explains Lipsa, Indian Alumnus, University of Debrecen.
With its community of almost 7000 international students which is 25 percent of the total number of over-all students enrolled, the University of Debrecen provides a real multi-cultural environment. It is home to more than 300 Indian students at present where roughly half of them is studying medicine-related programs including Dentistry and Public Health, and the other half of them are mainly interested in Engineering and IT.
“Hosting students from over 110 countries including India, we are extremely proud of our international student community and their accomplishments. We have some doctors currently working at the Clinical Centre of the University of Debrecen, some of whom have been living and working in Hungary for decades. Some students prefer to seek job opportunities in their home countries or other European countries after graduation. As we offer worldwide-recognized degrees that comply with the European Bologna System of Higher Education, we find that our graduates have no trouble finding jobs after leaving their alma mater”, says Prof.Attila Jenei.
The University of Debrecen is one of the largest institutions of higher education in Hungary and the whole region today. The cooperation of 14 faculties ensures a multi-disciplinary background guaranteeing the University a leading role as a research and education institution and the intellectual centre of Eastern Hungary. An international hub of knowledge in the region, the large international student community of the University of Debrecen takes an essential role in making it one of the leading higher education institutions of not only the country but the whole Central European region.
