A modern higher education institution with over 75 years of tradition in teaching and research, the Silesian University of Technology (SUT) is a prestigious and widely recognized research university. A member of the European University consortia, the Silesian University of Technology was established in 1945 as a scientific and educational facility for the most industrialized area in Poland. Not only one of the most industrialized in Europe, but also as one of the oldest and largest technical establishments in the country, SUT has been an important institution of public life playing a significant cultural and opinion-forming role in the region.

A NovelHigher Education Institution


SUT offers a variety of programs conducted in English and a large number of programs conducted in Polish, offered to both Polish and international students. Currently, 15 educational units of the University (13 faculties-schools and 2 institutes) offer more than 50 study programs and about 200 majors, including the whole spectrum of engineering studies. Aside from technical programs, candidates may also study management and production engineering, architecture, urban planning, transport, aviation, sociology as well as foreign languages and pedagogy.

SUT educational units are located in 3 neighbouring cities, which are Gliwice, Zabrze and Katowice, with the main seat in Gliwice. All study programs are supported by Polish Accreditation Committee, which is consistent with the European accreditation system. Until now, SUT has promoted over 200,000 graduates. It currently educates over 18,000 students at all three cycles of study: bachelor, master and doctoral”, states Professor Arkadiusz M??yk, Rec tor, Silesian University of Technology.

SUT offers a pro-quality scholarship for the best students coming from non-EU countries within the frames of the Excellence Initiative- Research University program. Student Career Office of SUT supports students and alumni of the University in navigating the job market by helping them search for internships and job opportunities. The Student Career Office organizes various job fairs, trainings, workshops, and arranges interviews with potential employers. The Silesian University of Technology employs more than 1,600 academic staff including international teachers from different parts of the world who support their students in various projects, encourage their development and open their minds to new perspectives and possibilities.

A Pioneering Institution in Teaching and Research


The University was awarded the status of a research university as one of ten distinguished universities in Poland after invited by Polish Ministry to participate in the ‘Excellence Initiative – Research University’ first competition. The Silesian University of Technology in the competition application presented its development plans including objectives and activities which constitute significant contribution towards the development and support of higher education in Poland and abroad.

With various main objectives such as increasing the impact of scientific activity on the development of world science, strengthening research cooperation with internationally renowned research centres, improving the education quality of students and doctoral students through the development of modern methods and double diploma programs, improving human resources policy, and improving the quality of the University's management the SUT intends to focus its scientific development across the following priority research areas: Computational Oncology and Personalized Medicine, Artificial Intelligence and Data Processing, Materials of the Future, Smart Cities and Future Mobility, Process Automation and Industry 4.0, Climate and Environmental Protection, and Modern Energy.

As one of the first universities in Poland, the SUT was granted the HR Excellence in Research Award by the European Commission in 2017 which is a recognition of the University's commitment to the transparent implementation strategy to improve the career development of scientists. In 2019 the University was awarded the laureate status in the first competition of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education ‘Excellence Initiative - Research University’ along with 1st place in Poland in the competition of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education for implementation doctorates, and a member of the EURECA-PRO European University consortium in 2020.

SUT has also received two Research Impact Leaders awards of the Elsevier as the university whose publications had the most significant impact on world science: in the Engineering and Technology category in 2016, and in the Social Sciences category in 2018. An active participant of the Erasmus+ Program which enables the participation of international students in exchange programmes as well as in international internships, the SUT is also present in the international rankings such as Times Higher Education and QS.
