VET Institute Of Arts and Science (Co-Education) College: Redefining Commerce Education for Industry-Ready & Globally Competitive Graduates

By Thiru S D Chandrasekar, Secretary - Vellalar Educational Trust

The global commerce education landscape is undergoing a fundamental shift. It is evolving with the presence of fintech innovation, data-driven business decisions, automation, and international regulatory frameworks, making traditional accounting and business studies inadequate.

Today’s employers look for graduates who can understand worldwide financial standards, traverse digital accounting platforms, assess business data, and quickly adjust to changing corporate environments.

At the same time, there is an exceptional need for commerce experts who are prepared for the business due to India’s booming economy, quick financial digitization, and increasing integration with international markets.

Higher education institutions face a clear challenge: to provide applied, technologically enabled, and internationally relevant commerce education that enhances employment and entrepreneurship outcomes across a range of student backgrounds, while strengthening curricula through practical and experiential learning.

Addressing these challenges head-on, VET Institute of Arts and Science (Co-education) College has positioned itself as a forward-looking commerce education provider focused on producing industry-ready and globally competitive graduates.

Founded in 2019 as part of the Vellalar Educational Trust, the institution has grown to provide a limited number of undergraduate courses to include a multidisciplinary institution with a focus on commerce, management, technology integration, and professional preparedness.

Although attached to the university, VET IAS complements the standard curriculum with well-planned certification courses, practical experience and constant adaptation of the syllabus to the prevailing global business trends and expectations of employees.

Career-Oriented Commerce Education

The institute engages in an active process of incorporating fintech ideas, business analytics, artificial intelligence, ERP exposure, and international business accounting into its teaching model. In acknowledging the drawbacks of traditional classroom education, VET IAS compliments university syllabus with value-added certificate programmes that guarantee quality education with not only academic qualifications but also practical skills upon graduation.

“This two-fold focus enables our students to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation an increasingly essential requirement in contemporary business jobs,” says Dr Geetha P S, Program Lead, School of Commerce, VET Institute of Arts and Science (Co-education) College.

Since its inception, the institute has demonstrated rapid academic expansion. Beginning with five undergraduate programmes in arts and commerce, VET IAS has systematically diversified its portfolio. Over the years, the college has introduced specialized undergraduate programmes such as B.Com (Computer Applications), B.Com (Professional Accounting), and B.Com (Accounting and Finance).

In line with evolving industry and academic requirements, the School of Commerce is further expanding its offerings with the introduction of B.Com (Information Technology) from the academic year 2025–26, while continuing to offer programmes in business management, economics, and computer science.

Its academic ecosystem was enhanced further by the introduction of postgraduate programmes, such as M.Com and MBA. “We currently have 16 undergraduate, 4 postgraduate programmes, and 8 research programmes, and approvals are ongoing to add to its courses in the academic year 2025-26 like B.Com Information Technology which is in line with its sensitivity of responding to industry demands,” says Dr Geetha P S.

A defining feature of VET IAS’s commerce education is its career-oriented programme design. Students get an advantage of a dual-qualification system that enables them to undertake professional qualifications in addition to degree programmes.

The CA Foundation with JK Shah Classes on campus provides students the assurance of preparing for their professional path while conveniently integrating professional guidance on campus, without the need for extensive external coaching.

The intentions to launch ACCA and CMA programmes, with management-led financial assistance, strengthen the inclusivity of the institute by offering global certifications to students, particularly those from rural and economically diverse backgrounds.

Future-Ready Finance Skills

The institute follows a “classroom-to-corporate” model, where theoretical concepts are immediately reinforced through industry-standard software tools. Students who study accounting, taxation, or compliance do not just study rules, but use them over the platforms such as Tally Prime, GST software, QuickBooks, and advanced MS Excel.

By submitting simulated GST returns and by operating payroll systems and financial statements, learners become familiar with the actual tools they will come across when working in the corporate world. Students can obtain add-on training in Power BI and cloud accounting to make them better prepared to perform data-intensive finance tasks.

The college partners with IBM, MSME to provide add-on certification in AI and data analytics units on the basis of commerce students. Such programmes improve critical thinking, technical literacy, and decision-making in users, which will allow them to move on to manual bookkeeping to data-enabled financial analysis.

Proposed addition of NISM qualifications will provide opportunities to banking, investment advisory and financial markets, and institutional subsidies will be provided to ease the financial barrier facing students of rural origin.

Looking ahead, VET IAS has articulated a clear strategic roadmap. As it progresses towards autonomous status, the institute aims to transition into a digital-first, research-oriented education hub. Planned curriculum expansions include blockchain, digital banking, cryptocurrency studies, artificial intelligence, data science, and ESG reporting. The establishment of incubation and startup hubs will support student entrepreneurship through mentorship and seed funding.

International collaborations, including MOUs with Singapore South Asia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Asia Pacific University, enable global immersion, student exchange, and faculty collaboration, further enhancing global exposure.
