Indian economy is experiencing an overwhelming growth that has made the government make significant changes in public policies in terms of social, economic and institutional factors. As we move forward, it has also become important to reimagine economics education based on the dynamic nature of the business ecosystem. Most of the recognized institutions in India that offer this education predominantly have theory based curriculum that is an obstruction to holistic understanding.

Vinayaka Mission’s School of Economics and Public Policy understood this problem and combined the best of textbook and applied economics to create an education framework that is aimed at 360 degree learning. The college offers a specialized three year BSc Economics course and four year BSc Economics (Honours with Research) course that stand testimony to the fact that it wants to create a niche in this segment.

The college believes that applied learning is equally important when it comes to education. Today, we can see the union of economics with all the emerging subjects like data analytics, AI and others. VSEP felt the need to create a curriculum that emphasizes on the relation of economics with these subjects.

“We try to stay updated with the global economic trends as well and try to provide a futuristic model of education to our students.

We want to make our students aware of the global economic shift that is happening right now so that they can add value to the system after completing graduation”, mentioned Prof. Debdulal Thakur, Dean, Vinayaka Mission’s School of Economics and Public Policy.

Standing Out

There are a number of aspects that makes the institution stand apart in the education sector. It is the application oriented learning infrastructure that comes first in line in this regard. With a distinct vision of working at the interception of economics and data policy, the college has created a separate place for itself. Added to this, it has focused on emerging subjects like data driven systems, AI in policy making and many others.

The course focuses on behavioral economics to make students understand the intricacies of decision making, especially when it is done for public good. VSEP has structured its course with the combination of all these aspects which has proved to be very beneficial for the students until now.

Like every other progressive institution, VSEP has also established industry collaborations to provide students with specialized training and certification. It has partnered with HCL Tech to provide the students with industry certified training of Artificial Intelligence, digital data and data driven systems.

“We have established partnerships with other reputed organizations that provide our students with internship opportunities. We insist our students to complete at least two internships before the completion of their course.

There are other certification programs as well, for example, foreign languages, which students can pursue and those will be separate from their graduation results. Immediate certifications are provided after completing the courses on foreign languages and data analytics. This adds significant value to a candidate’s resume”, said Prof. Thakur.

When it comes to career building of students, the college has all possible facilities to ensure complete satisfaction. VSEP has a dedicated placement assistance and career coaching department that takes care of all kinds of enquiries that students can have. The college is aware of the fact that the business ecosystem is undergoing profound change and the fact that this college specializes in providing industry-relevant education increases the employability of a candidate.

After completion of the degree, a candidate is able to avail many promising job opportunities. The college provides specialized UPSC training to students with the help of retired IAS officers. VSEP also provides entrepreneurial training and assistance through Ganesan Incubation and Entrepreneurship Centre.

With specialized mentorship and learning on social science theories provides students the required competitive edge that they require to make their position in the industry and build a promising career. The college also has an entrepreneurship incubation center that aims at nourishing business ideas of the students.

Through this it wants to inspire young minds that are interested in building a company. “We provide our students with the learning of many computational tools like Machine Learning that we believe is acting as an enabler rather than a driver in the industry”, stated Prof. Thakur.

Future Endeavors

Operating under Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation, the college has been able to gain significant trust and recognition in the market with industry-relevant learning and an honest vision to provide meaningful education. Looking forward, the college is planning expansion in a number of aspects.

“We are also working on creating a framework that provides semester exchange program for candidates. We will be able make the scope of our course much bigger with that”, concluded Prof. Thakur.
