KEA to Use Facial Recognition at All CET Centers This Year

For effective prevention of impersonation and other irregularities in the Common Entrance Test (CET), the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) has made public the use of facial recognition technology at all examination centers in the state this year.

The KEA has created a web-based application for the technology and has also instructed the appointment of an extra invigilator for every 100 students. This extra invigilator shall check students coming into the examination hall using face recognition. Also, this year the admission ticket will have a QR code that, upon scanning, will offer full information of the student. This initiative is meant to streamline the verification process further. Last year, the use of facial recognition was implemented only at a few sensitive CET centers, and the service was outsourced to a private agency. This year, however, the KEA has opted to implement the technology internally and make it available at all exam centers.

Further, the KEA has also introduced facial recognition technology during the CET application process, making the process more secure and efficient. This action taken by the KEA demonstrates their intent to keep the exam integrity intact and avoid any form of fraud in the examination process.

Prasanna H., Executive Director of the KEA, said, “This year, we used Microsoft’s face recognition technology for the application process. During this procedure, we captured the students’ photographs. We had also used this technology in the exam held for the recruitment of police sub-inspectors.”
