Industry Collaborations: Gian Jyoti Institute of Management and Technology
A Brand to Reckon
Philip Joseph, a commerce undergraduate from Kerala, was apprehensive while packing his bags to set out on a journey of 3,000 Kms to reach Gian Jyoti Institute of Management and Technology (GJIMT) - an institute that he zeroed in after rigorous research when he decided to pursue MBA. Philip\'s major concern was finding another student from his home state as he had never travelled outside Kerala before. GJIMT, a 17 year old management institution from Mohali, Punjab, is featured among the top 40 management institutes in the country on various surveys, which attracts students across the borders. The student diversity in the campus is a sight to behold.
It was then only a matter of time before Philip became a part of Gian Jyoti, an education community that has been providing holistic education from the last four decades to students all over the world. Overwhelmed by the diversity of students at GJIMT and the quality of training that he was able to receive, Philip wrote a testimony to his alma mater after finishing his MBA in 2015. A part of his testimony reads, \"When I came to GJIMT from Kerala in 2013, I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity of the student community at GJIMT. The Gian Jyoti community is extremely warm. The campus facilities are great, and the faculty is highly motivated and dedicated.\" Philip works as a Credit Relationship Manager at HDB Financial Services today, and his MBA experience at GJIMT is a message to the students who are reluctant to come out of their homes in pursuit of quality higher education. At GJIMT, we can see many students, who have travelled from all over the country with hopes of making a bright future.
Being one among the few management institutes in the country that were established to support the liberalization of Indian economy and IT revolution in the 1990s, GJIMT had one mission in common with its competitors - preparing students for the corporate world. In the subsequent year of operation, the institute created a niche in management education sector with academic excellence, quality placements and innovative pedagogy practices in a disciplined manner, which made them comparable to the best in the country. \"After 25 years in school education, when we started our MBA programs, we had clear cut policies about preparing our students for the corporate sector and placing them in top level companies,\" says J. S. Bedi, Chairman, GJIMT, who has played an instrumental role in establishing Gian Jyoti Educational Society (GJES) in 1974 to provide quality elementary education to the state of Punjab.
Since its inception, GJIMT has been preparing leaders for business and public services, advancing knowledge across disciplines and industries to promote economic progress throughout the nation. With a team of 24 faculty members where 15 of them are PhD holders, the institute collaborates with industry to understand the skills that are required for various employers. Joint certification program with HDFC Bank and LEAP program with Reliance are few such efforts from GJIMT to make students ready for recruitments. The institute has also introduced forums like seminars and workshops by industry experts, industrial visits, part-time jobs, project work, internship programs, and consultancy related jobs to strengthen their association with the industry.
\"Our faculty members regularly find mentors from the industry who can guide our students to meet the current requirements of the industry. Here, every group of 8 - 10 students has a mentor inside the colleges as well as in the industry. Their efforts have helped us significantly in finding the best placement opportunities for our students,\" says Bedi. Despite the various uncertainties in the employment market, the last five years of placement has been steady at GJIMT, with majority of the students being recruited by major companies in India by offering packages ranging between Rs. 2.4 to Rs. 7 lakhs per annum. Indeed, Bedi says, \"We invite only those companies which promise to take our students by paying more than 2.4 lakhs with some incentives. Thus, we ensure that our students start their career with a good package in hand and being able to achieve this is the satisfying for us in the institutional level.\"
With a legacy of 41 years in the education sector, Gian Jyoti is a brand to reckon with in the field of education today. The group has expanded their wings from elementary preparation to higher education that includes engineering and management programs of the highest quality. Bedi, a social entrepreneur who has lead Gian Jyoti from the front by setting an example for others, is a satisfied man now. However, his desire to provide quality education has never diminished. He hopes, \"Today, I am happy the way the institutions under Gian Jyoti are progressing. Within five years of time, we would like to bring all these institutions under the deemed university status.\"
J.S. Bedi, Chairman
A Law Graduate from Punjab University, Bedi firmly believes that there is no shortcut to success. He takes an active interest in all facets of education delivery like organization of national and international level conferences, publishing of refereed journals and building the institute as leading management institute of the region.
