JIPMER Launches India’s First Integrated MBBS-Ayurveda Course

  • JIPMER to start MBBS-BAMS integrated programme combining Allopathic and Ayurveda.
  • JIPMER Karaikal campus to open 470-bed hospital by June 2027.
  • Proposal for a new medical college in Puducherry is currently under review.

The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry is going to start an integrated MBBS-BAMS programme at the institute.

Prataprao Jadhav, who is the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and AYUSH(Independent Charge), has announced the initiative to combine Allopathic and Ayurvedic medicine into a single academic curriculum with the launch of an integrated medical and Ayurvedic programme at JIPMER Puducherry.

The state’s Union Minister has stated that the programme is currently in the planning phase and a new curriculum is being developed.

The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and AYUSH shared the government's vision to integrate allopathy and ayurveda in medical education saying “The Union government is planning to introduce a new integrated medical course combining MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) and BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery).”

The minister additionally discussed the provision of healthcare in the area and advancements in education. He announced that the Puducherry government’s plan to establish a new medical college is under review and that a decision will be made shortly.

JIPMER is developing its Karaikal campus with a new 470-bed hospital. According to the institute's director, outpatient services are expected to begin as early as January 2027, and the entire hospital is expected to be open by June 2027.

Additionally, the minister mentioned that a proposal from the Puducherry government is being reviewed to create a new medical college in the area, according to Medical Dialogues.
