Karnataka to Add 450+ New Medical Seats for 2025-26 Session
- Karnataka gets 450 additional MBBS seats across eight government colleges.
- Some colleges denied approval due to insufficient infrastructure facilities.
- Court orders admissions for 200 MBBS seats at JNMC Belagavi.
Karnataka will receive a minimum of 450 additional medical seats this year, after the National Medical Commission (NMC) gave its approval. The updated list of extra seats in medical colleges nationwide includes eight government medical colleges in Karnataka, each receiving 50 additional seats.
Colleges receiving additional seats include Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences, Chikkaballapur Institute of Medical Sciences, Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences, Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, Mysore Medical College and Research Institute, Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Research Institute in Bengaluru, and Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences.
Seven additional colleges that had applied for an increase in enrollment - Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences, Chamarajnagar Institute of Medical Sciences, Gadag Institute of Medical Sciences, Karwar Institute of Medical Sciences, Koppal Institute of Medical Sciences, Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences, and Shimoga Institute of Medical Sciences - have not been approved.
The proposal for Ramanagara Institute of Medical Sciences and Kanakapura Institute of Medical Sciences has been indicated as withdrawn in the list of newly established government medical colleges. Initially, there were requests for 150 and 100 seats, but they were turned down due to a lack of infrastructure.
Jagadguru Gangadhar Mahaswamigalu Moorusavimath Medical College, among the deemed universities, has received an extra 50 seats. Sri Siddhartha Medical College, Tumakuru, and Sri Siddartha Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Bengaluru, have not received approval for extra seats.

Furthermore, the Dharwad bench of the high court has ordered a stay on a decision made by the undergraduate medical education board of NMC to deny admissions to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), which was involved in a bribery scandal.
According to an order dated Aug 29, the Medical Counselling Committee and Karnataka Examinations Authority have been instructed to add 188 MBBS seats and 12 MBBS seats, respectively, to the seat matrices and carry out admissions for the academic year 2025-26 without any delays.
This totals an extra 200 seats. KEA stated that it plans to await the final list from NMC to add new seats for the upcoming counselling round. Previously, the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested a senior doctor serving as an assessor, who reportedly took a bribe of Rs 10 lakh for a favorable assessment report on JNMC of KLE Society, Belagavi. NMC subsequently notified the college that its accreditation would not be extended for 2025-26.
