Chalmers University of Technology: Where Deep Tech Meets Entrepreneurial Ambition

Across Europe, entrepreneurship education is undergoing a significant transformation. Universities are moving beyond classroom-based business education to create environments where students can work alongside researchers, industry leaders and technology innovators to turn ideas into viable ventures.

As Europe strengthens its position as a global hub for research, this shift has placed greater emphasis on universities that can bridge the gap between research and commercialisation, equipping students not merely to generate business ideas, but to execute, build and scale them.

Among the institutions advancing this model is Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, whose entrepreneurial journey combines nearly two centuries of technological education with decades of structured support for research-based venture creation.

Building Entrepreneurship into the DNA of Technology Education

Chalmers University of Technology’s entrepreneurial story has roots extending back to the late 1960s, when Torkel Wallmark returned from Bell Labs in the United States and recognised the potential of translating academic inventions into commercial ventures. His efforts helped establish an early culture in which researchers could pursue entrepreneurship and create spin-offs from their work.

The momentum accelerated during the 1990s. Following Chalmers’ return to private university status in 1994, the institution gained greater freedom to develop entrepreneurial initiatives.

It subsequently established a venture capital fund, launched the Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship in 1997, introduced a seed-financing operation in 1998 and established an incubator in 1999. These initiatives eventually evolved into Chalmers Ventures, the university’s wholly owned venture-creation company.

The underlying philosophy has remained consistent: technological discoveries should have pathways to become real-world solutions. Rather than expecting researchers to become entrepreneurs themselves, Chalmers has created a system where technical inventors can work alongside individuals with entrepreneurial capabilities. This model has become one of the institution’s defining strengths.

A Different Model of Entrepreneurship Education

At the heart of Chalmers’ approach is a simple but powerful premise: the inventor and the entrepreneur do not necessarily have to be the same person. “While conventional entrepreneurship programmes often ask students to develop their own ideas from scratch, Chalmers allows entrepreneurial students to work with research-based inventions already emerging from laboratories.

Professors, PhD researchers and postdoctoral researchers contribute scientific and technological expertise, while students bring business development, creativity and entrepreneurial ambition”, shares Mats Lundqvist, Vice President.

The result is a team-based model that enables students to experience the complete entrepreneurial journey - from understanding a technology and identifying applications to developing proof of concepts and building ventures.

The depth of this experience is equally important. Chalmers’ Entrepreneurship and Business Design master's programme spans two years, providing students with the time required to develop not only business capabilities but also self-awareness, leadership skills and the ability to collaborate effectively.

The university’s experience suggests that this approach has lasting impact. Approximately 80 percent of graduates from the programme pursue entrepreneurial careers, while others transition successfully into more conventional professional roles.

Connecting Research, Industry and Emerging Technologies

Chalmers’ entrepreneurial ecosystem extends well beyond its dedicated entrepreneurship programme. With approximately 11,000 students, the university provides opportunities for learners across disciplines to engage with innovation and entrepreneurship.

Industry collaboration is a major component of this ecosystem. Strategic relationships with companies such as Volvo and Ericsson give students opportunities to work on real-world challenges through courses, projects and thesis assignments.

The university also offers a corporate entrepreneurship track in which students work with corporate partners on venture creation, bringing entrepreneurial thinking into established organisations.

Technology is another critical pillar. As a technical university, Chalmers exposes students to emerging fields including artificial intelligence, biotechnology, nanotechnology and quantum computing. Entrepreneurship students, in particular, frequently work with ventures built around technologies still at the frontier of development.

This creates a valuable complementarity. Researchers may have spent years developing a technology, while entrepreneurial students explore how it can be applied, transformed into a product or developed into a commercially viable proposition. By combining these capabilities, Chalmers creates a practical bridge between scientific discovery and market opportunity.

From Venture Creation to the Next Generation of Scale-Ups

Chalmers is now looking beyond early-stage venture creation towards the more difficult challenge of scaling deep-tech businesses. One emerging initiative is the Chalmers Entrepreneurial Fellows programme, which gives postdoctoral researchers an opportunity to spend a full year exploring venture creation around their research while receiving financial support.

The university aims to expand this model and eventually attract researchers from beyond Sweden. Chalmers is also working towards making entrepreneurship more accessible across its wider student community through a planned entrepreneurship minor or micro-credential for master's students.

Perhaps the most significant future priority, however, is scale-up. Deep-tech companies often face fundamentally different growth challenges from conventional technology startups. “Chalmers therefore aims to develop stronger mechanisms for helping promising research-based ventures move from invention and early venture creation into sustainable scale-ups.

Experienced entrepreneurs from the Chalmers ecosystem will increasingly be brought into this process, adding practical growth expertise to the university’s existing research and educational capabilities”, adds Mats Lundqvist.

For Chalmers, entrepreneurship is ultimately not a separate academic discipline. It is a mechanism for making technological knowledge matter beyond the laboratory. By connecting researchers, students, industry and experienced entrepreneurs, the university is building an ecosystem designed not simply to produce entrepreneurs, but to create teams capable of transforming ambitious ideas into enduring ventures.
