SIES College of Management Studies: Creating Industry-Ready MCA Graduates through Experiential Learning

By Dr Anup Palsokar, Professor & Head - Department of MCA

As technology-driven roles grow increasingly complex, MCA education in Maharashtra must balance rigorous academic quality with real-world exposure through sustained NBA accreditation, immersive industry engagement, project-based learning, and practitioner led instruction.

This integrated approach ensures graduates are job-ready from day one, and SIES College of Management Studies uniquely embodies this model as the only MCA college in Maharashtra to achieve all four together.

Established under the visionary umbrella of the South Indian Educational Society, SIES College of Management Studies (SIESCOMS) stands as a testament to how educational institutions can evolve with time while staying rooted in purpose.

The South Indian Educational Society, founded in 1932 by a group of middle-class visionaries, began its journey with a modest school in Matunga before expanding into higher education.

With two government-aided science colleges already in operation, the trust ventured into professional education by establishing SIES College of Management Studies in 1997 at the Nerul Campus, Navi Mumbai. From its inception, the institution has been committed to developing professionals equipped to navigate complex business and technology environments.

The college began with the Master of Management Studies (MMS) programme, the University of Mumbai’s equivalent of an MBA. Recognizing the growing influence of technology on business, SIESCOMS expanded its academic portfolio in 2001 with the introduction of the Master of Computer Applications (MCA) programme, affiliated to the University of Mumbai and approved by AICTE.

At the time, it was among the few private institutions in Maharashtra to offer this programme. Now in its 25th year, the MCA department continues to be a flagship programme of the institution, reflecting consistency, adaptability, and academic rigor.

SIESCOMS stands as a benchmark institution where academic discipline, industry immersion, and applied technology education converge to create truly industry-ready professionals

Curriculum Designed for a Dynamic IT Landscape

The MCA programme at SIESCOMS was conceived with a clear objective: to develop professionals who can understand business requirements, translate them into technological solutions, and drive process automation across industries.

The curriculum is structured to provide a strong grounding in computer science fundamentals before advancing into contemporary technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, cybersecurity, and data analytics.

Beyond formal syllabus requirements, the institution continuously supplements learning through workshops, hands-on training, and exposure to emerging tools, including large language models and automation platforms.

“At our institute, we emphasize not just coding, but also analytical thinking, system design, and problem-solving from a business perspective. This holistic approach ensures that our students graduate with both technical competence and contextual awareness of how technology functions within real organizations.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

A defining feature of the MCA programme is its strong practical orientation. Students undertake structured projects across the first three semesters, progressing from mini projects to more advanced research-oriented work under faculty mentorship. These projects help students understand teamwork, requirement analysis, and solution development well before they enter the workplace.

The final semester is dedicated entirely to a six month full-time industry internship, enabling students to immerse themselves in live organizational environments without the distraction of parallel academic commitments.

This extended exposure provides invaluable insights into corporate culture, workflows, and expectations. Recruiter feedback consistently highlights student’ readiness to understand business processes and deploy appropriate technologies from the outset.

Complementing this structure is a robust industry engagement framework. Regular corporate interaction sessions, informal alumni interactions, domain-specific lectures, hackathons, and sponsored competitions ensure students remain aligned with industry realities.

Dedicated placement support, aptitude training, mock interviews, and career mentoring further strengthen employability across IT services, fintech, manufacturing, and non-traditional technology roles.

Faculty Excellence, Research, and the Road Ahead

Academic quality at SIESCOMS is anchored in a rigorous faculty recruitment and development process. Faculty members are selected through multi-stage evaluations that assess academic credentials, teaching ability, technical expertise, and student feedback.

Continuous mentoring of new faculty, biannual performance reviews, and strong encouragement for research ensure sustained academic excellence.

The MCA department has steadily built a strong research culture, with faculty publications, patents, and collaborative projects contributing to academic depth. The recent approval to offer a PhD programme in Computer Applications marks a significant milestone, reinforcing the institution’s transition from a teaching-focused model to a teaching-research-consultancy ecosystem. Back-to-back accreditation by the National Board of Accreditation and consecutive NAAC accreditations further validate the department’s academic standing.

In conclusion, with a 25-year legacy, strong industry integration, and an expanding research focus, SIES College of Management Studies continues to shape professionals who are adaptable, skilled, and industry-ready. Its MCA programme exemplifies how thoughtful pedagogy, faculty excellence, and practical exposure can create enduring value in higher education.
