Whistling Woods International: Shaping The Future Of Media & Communication Studies
By Rahul Puri, Director - Academics
In a world where artificial intelligence, immersive storytelling, sensor-based marketing, and global media convergence are reshaping communication, media education is undergoing an exciting transformation. From scriptwriting and video editing to content recommendations and audience measurement, AI is becoming an integral part of every phase of the creative process. This integration not only simplifies production but also allows for exceptional degrees of efficiency, innovation, and personalization. Consequently, the old frameworks for storytelling and content presentation are being rewritten, creating new opportunities for creators and viewers to come.
At the heart of this change is Whistling Woods International, a trailblazer in preparing students for the ever-evolving demands of the media and entertainment industry. In an interaction with Higher Education Review, Rahul Puri, Director (Academics) at Whistling Woods International, shared his insights into how the institution is preparing students to prosper in the dynamic media ecosystem shaped by advanced technologies.
With technological advancements like AI & blockchain transforming media, how does the program integrate these innovations into the curriculum & ensure students are prepared to be active creators in this evolving space?
Building on the institute's solid reputation in film, design, fashion, animation, and game design, the program provides mass communication students with rich cross-disciplinary experience beyond conventional media studies. This experiential, creative education prepares students with the skills and knowledge usually associated with specialized programs. What differentiates the course is its focus on the business aspects of media and that includes the economics of film, TV, OTT platforms, and also growing technologies such as AI. Frequent interactions with professionals in the field provide a timely, real-world aspect to the learning process, making sure students understand both artistic intent and commercial thinking.
At Whistling Woods International, the Emerging Media Lab has been the heart of innovation on campus and a center of experimentation for trying new technologies and incorporating them into academics. AI has been systematically integrated into the media and communication curriculum, with students getting a theoretical understanding as well as hands-on experience. Additionally, with faculty-guided workshops, students explore real-world applications such as accurate 3D printing for prototypes, and the legal and technological overlaps of AI, including its potential to combine with blockchain. We try to widen students’ understanding of AI far beyond basic tools such as ChatGPT, challenging them to understand technology as a revolutionary force in media. This futurist strategy helps ensure that learners are not only consumers of technology but also essential players in shaping its future.

Our students are out in the field, working with FICCI, MAMI, NMACC, and even global events like Lollapalooza and Coldplay concerts. The students also have the flexibility to pursue two weeks of live projects during their semesters, giving them diverse industry exposure.
The institute has a dynamic network of around 3,000 alumni, who are themselves contributing to the media and entertainment sector. The alumni are either in key roles at top firms or have embarked on their entrepreneurial journey, opening up agencies and production houses. This large body of alumni acts as a strong support for students today, providing them with rich industry knowledge, mentoring, and business connections.
Another major advantage is the faculty, as all our professors are active professionals in their respective fields. They bring current industry knowledge to the classroom and serve as mentors. They help students make industry connections and even support their entrepreneurial aspirations.
