Australia’s Melbourne University Signs MoU With TIDCO
Synopsis: The University of Melbourne and TIDCO sign an MoU to establish a Centre for Emerging Technologies at Tamil Nadu Knowledge City, advancing research, innovation, and workforce development in quantum computing and agri-tech.
The University of Melbourne has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) to establish a Centre for Emerging Technologies at the upcoming Tamil Nadu Knowledge City in Tiruvallur.
The partnership is aimed at strengthening research, innovation, and skills development while deepening academic and industrial collaboration between India and Australia. The centre will be housed in a dedicated 20,000-square-foot research and teaching facility within the Knowledge City's plug-and-play Knowledge Tower. It will focus on collaborative work in quantum computing and agri-tech, combining the University of Melbourne's research expertise with Tamil Nadu's growing industrial ecosystem.
The collaboration will support basic, applied, and translational research while promoting industry-oriented curriculum development, workforce skilling, certification programmes, joint research and development projects, prototyping, and pilot testing. The initiative also aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry by encouraging practical, innovation-driven solutions.

In addition to research activities, the centre will facilitate industry-academia engagement through exchange programmes, technical workshops, and dual certification courses. These initiatives are expected to equip students and professionals with advanced skills aligned with emerging technology sectors and future industry requirements.
University of Melbourne Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Wesley said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing research, innovation, and skills development for the benefit of both countries. TIDCO Chairman and Managing Director Dr. V. Karthikeyan described the collaboration as a significant step towards positioning Tamil Nadu as a global destination for quantum computing and agri-tech research and development.
The MoU builds upon a Letter of Intent signed earlier this year, demonstrating continued progress in educational and technological cooperation between the two organisations. It also aligns with Tamil Nadu's broader vision of developing the Knowledge City as an integrated hub for higher education, research, entrepreneurship, and advanced manufacturing.
The partnership is expected to strengthen cross-border innovation, nurture skilled talent, and create new opportunities for research commercialisation. By combining global academic expertise with regional industrial strengths, the initiative seeks to contribute to technological advancement and sustainable economic growth while reinforcing the strategic partnership between India and Australia.
