The joint doctoral programme covers six priority research areas: sustainable development, clean energy, circular economy, water and wastewater management, critical minerals and semiconductor-related technologies. These fields reflect shared research interests and address challenges linked to environmental sustainability, resource management and emerging technologies.
Doctoral scholars enrolled in the programme will receive joint supervision from faculty members at IIT Roorkee and the University of Calgary. They will also gain access to academic resources and research facilities at both institutions, enabling them to develop international research experience and engage with diverse academic perspectives.
The programme is intended to encourage researchers to work on complex challenges that require expertise across multiple disciplines. Faculty collaboration is also expected to support knowledge exchange, strengthen research networks and create opportunities for joint academic projects.
The partnership expands opportunities for doctoral researchers to engage with international research teams and develop expertise relevant to academic, industrial and societal needs. Students will be able to benefit from the research environments of both institutions, while faculty members can collaborate on projects and share specialised knowledge.
IIT Roorkee Director K. K. Pant says the initiative creates opportunities for interdisciplinary research and encourages doctoral scholars to address societal and industrial challenges. University of Calgary Provost Sandra Davidson also highlights the potential for closer research collaboration and academic engagement between faculty members and students.
The agreement forms part of the institutions’ efforts to expand international research partnerships in areas such as clean energy, water management, critical minerals and semiconductor technologies.
