India Offers 1,000 Scholarships for Afghan Students in 2026–27

Synopsis: India has announced 1,000 scholarships for Afghan students for the 2026–27 academic year under the ICCR's Special Scholarship Scheme, enabling eligible candidates to pursue online undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

The Government of India said it is giving out 1,000 scholarships for Afghan students for the 2026–27 academic years, as part of the Special Scholarship Scheme for Afghan Nationals (SSSAN) which is managed by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). The whole idea is basically to widen access to higher education for Afghan youth, by providing fully funded, online undergraduate as well as postgraduate programmes via India’s e-VidyaBharati (e-VB) iLearn platform.

The scholarship programme shows India’s ongoing commitment to back education in Afghanistan, even with the persistent obstacles students deal with when trying to enter international higher education. It was brought in so learning can keep going; the initiative lets Afghan nationals join degree programmes run by recognised Indian higher education institutions, but without the need to relocate from their home country.

Under the scheme, eligible students can pursue lots of undergraduate plus postgraduate courses that are delivered online by participating Indian universities. The scholarships mostly cover tuition as well as other compulsory academic fees tied to the chosen programmes. Students also get access to digital learning resources, virtual classrooms, and academic support via the e-VB platform that has been developed for reinforcing educational cooperation with partner countries.

The programme is open to Afghan nationals who satisfy the eligibility requirements that are prescribed by the ICCR as well as by participating institutions, Applicants have to meet the academic qualifications for the course they choose and finish the online registration process via the official iLearn portal within the period that is notified. On the portal, there are detailed guidelines, participating universities, and the available courses, plus the application instructions, all of which are given to help prospective candidates as they go through the whole admission process.

India has maintained a long standing educational partnership with Afghanistan, sort of through scholarship programmes and those academic exchanges. Since 2005, thousands of Afghan students have benefited from Indian government scholarships, which have helped in the making of skilled professionals in areas like engineering, medicine, management, science, humanities, and information technology, and all that. After the disruptions in recent years, the persistence of the online scholarship initiative becomes important so Afghan students can still reach solid higher education through digital platforms.

The announcement arrives while India keeps using education as one of the key parts of its development help with Afghanistan. Through Indian universities, the initiative delivers internationally recognized degree programmes, and it is meant to bolster academic capability, raise employability, and back longer-term human resource development for Afghan youth. This scholarship programme also underlines the educational links between the two countries, even as it widens chances for students to gain globally relevant understanding and workplace competencies despite continuing regional challenges.
