University of Chicago Launches AI Master’s Programme for 2027

The University of Chicago launches its first dedicated AI master's programme, a nine-month course beginning in autumn 2027. Students will study advanced AI systems, governance and applications through practical projects and electives.
The University of Chicago has launched its first master's degree programme dedicated exclusively to artificial intelligence (AI), introducing a nine-month, full-time Master of Science in Applied Artificial Intelligence. The programme will welcome its first cohort in autumn 2027 and aims to prepare technically qualified students to develop, deploy and manage AI solutions for real-world applications.
Offered through the university's Physical Sciences Division and Data Science Institute, the programme combines advanced AI concepts with practical projects. It is designed for students who already possess a strong technical foundation and want to advance beyond fundamental machine learning and deep learning knowledge.

The curriculum comprises four core courses covering AI foundations and principles, advanced architectures and applications, AI security, safety and governance, and value creation and leadership with AI.
Students will also select five elective courses across three focus areas: AI in Practice, Frontier AI and Performance AI. They must choose at least one elective from each area, allowing them to explore multiple dimensions of AI while tailoring their remaining coursework to their interests.
Available electives include multimodal agents, production AI, quantum computation, biomedicine, asset management and an AI practicum. The course structure aims to connect theoretical learning with practical problem-solving and the development of industry-relevant capabilities.
The programme integrates hands-on learning from the beginning. Students will work on real-world problems throughout their coursework and develop a professional portfolio demonstrating their technical capabilities.
Faculty members bring experience from academic research, entrepreneurship and industry applications of AI. The programme also addresses the growing need for professionals who can translate business requirements into AI solutions, evaluate potential risks, test systems and refine their performance before deployment.
Arnab Bose, senior instructional professor and faculty director of the programme, says the course responds to the rapid evolution of generative AI and AI agents. It aims to equip students with the conceptual understanding and practical skills required to apply advanced AI technologies in professional settings.
Students will attend classes in person at the university's downtown Chicago campus, providing access to a major business and technology environment. The programme also offers dedicated career guidance to help students explore professional opportunities in the AI sector.
