IIT Bombay and Tohoku University Unite to Advance Innovation and Research
It is an important step to deepen Indo-Japanese academic collaboration; a strategic agreement has been signed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay with Japan's Tohoku University.
The partnership between India and Japan is aimed at elevating academic and research excellence, promoting innovation, and fostering strong industry-academia connections. A joint declaration establishing the Tohoku University-IIT Bombay Joint Institute of Excellence (JIE) has been signed by the two institutions as part of their collaboration. This project will act a center for research and development in important fields like materials science, artificial intelligence, disaster resilience, and sustainable energy. The agreement's creation of a Dual Doctoral Degree Program, which enables students to obtain joint PhDs from both universities, is one of its main features. This program is expected to create new avenues for research scholars and promote more scholarly cooperation between Japan and India.
The partnership is also included by student and faculty exchange programs and collaborative research projects. During the signing event, the Joint institute initiative was outlined by Prof. Mashiro Yamaguchi, Tohoku University's research focus was shared by Prof. Daisuke Komori, and IIT Bombay's vision was presented by Prof.P.Seshu.
The initiative comes after Tohoku University students participated in a successful Global Immersion program held by IIT Bombay in March 2025. The project received lot of praise and is regarded as a first step in creating a long-lasting academic relationship between the two countries.
