UGC Alerts Students Against Three Fake Universities

  • UGC warns against unrecognized institutions offering invalid degrees, urging verification before admission to protect careers.
  • Three fake universities named: NIMS Delhi, Sarva Bharatiya Shiksha Peeth Karnataka, and National Backward Krushi Vidyapeeth Maharashtra.
  • Degrees from these self-styled bodies have no legal acceptance for higher studies or employment nationwide.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a public alert warning students, parents and employers about three fake universities that are operating in India without legal authority to award degrees. According to the regulator, these institutions are unauthorized, unrecognized, and are not listed under the provisions of the UGC Act, 1956 meaning the qualifications they issue are invalid and unacceptable for further education or employment.

The UGC explained that only institutions recognized under Section 2(f) or declared as deemed universities under Section 3 of the Act have the legal right to confer degrees. None of the three flagged bodies meet these criteria, nor do they have approval from statutory authorities such as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

The first institution named in the alert is the National Institute of Management Solution (NIMS) in Delhi. Despite its name suggesting a management focus, the UGC clarified that the body has no legal recognition as a university and therefore cannot award valid degrees. Students holding or pursuing degrees from NIMS have been cautioned that those credentials carry no academic or legal standing.

The second flagged institution is Sarva Bharatiya Shiksha Peeth, located in Tumkur, Karnataka. Like NIMS, it does not appear in the official UGC list of recognized universities and lacks approval under the UGC Act or from AICTE. Prospective and current students have been advised to reconsider enrolment to avoid jeopardizing their career prospects.

The third body under scrutiny is the National Backward Krushi Vidyapeeth in Solapur, Maharashtra. The UGC reiterated that degrees issued by this entity are also considered invalid, and urged stakeholders to consult official sources before enrolling.

As part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard educational standards and academic integrity, the UGC regularly updates and publishes lists of recognized and unrecognized institutions. Students are strongly encouraged to verify the authenticity of any university through the UGC’s official website before making admission decisions.
