IIT Gandhinagar Opens Maritime Engineering Admissions

Synopsis: IIT Gandhinagar introduces new MDes and MTech in Maritime Engineering programmes for 2026–27, focusing on interdisciplinary learning, design innovation, logistics, maritime infrastructure, and industry-oriented technical education.
The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) has announced the launch of two new postgraduate programmes Master of Design (MDes) and Master of Technology (MTech) in Maritime Engineering for the 2026–27 academic sessions. The institute stated that the programmes are being introduced to address evolving industry requirements and strengthen interdisciplinary, future-focused education.
According to IIT Gandhinagar, the new academic offerings are designed to combine innovation, practical learning, and research-driven education with emerging technology and infrastructure needs. The institute aims to equip students with technical expertise, systems thinking, and collaborative problem-solving capabilities aligned with global industry trends.
The Master of Design programme will be developed through IITGN’s Design and Innovation Centre and will integrate design thinking with engineering, technology, and social sciences. Officials stated that the curriculum focuses on human-centric problem solving, creativity, and interdisciplinary collaboration to help students address real-world societal and technological challenges. The programme is expected to prepare graduates for careers in product design, UX design, innovation strategy, and related fields.

The MTech programme in Maritime Engineering will focus on specialised areas such as port and ocean infrastructure, maritime logistics, coastal systems, and regulatory frameworks. IITGN noted that the course is intended to support India’s growing maritime sector and strengthen expertise linked to shipping, infrastructure development, and the blue economy. The programme will also include industry-oriented training and exposure to practical operational challenges in maritime systems.
Institute officials highlighted that the introduction of these programmes reflects IIT Gandhinagar’s broader strategy to modernise technical education by aligning academic learning with emerging sectors such as AI, sustainability, advanced engineering, and logistics. The institute has increasingly focused on interdisciplinary education and industry collaboration to create graduates capable of addressing rapidly changing technological demands.
